Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/24/95


	The meeting was called to order at Mon Jul 24 19:30 EDT 1995 by ghudson.

	Office Report:

		jhawk: Move to allocate $44 for new book on SunOS and
		Solaris crash dumps, seconded, white-balloted.

		jweiss looked into purchasing office supplies, it's a
		bit inconvenient and someone needs to be around to
		receive the purchance.  Mail was sent to sipb-office
		and sipb-ec.

		ghudson: We have everything but the new SCSI card and the
		case for the new dual pentium (we sent the old one
		back).

		ghudson: We have a slight flying insect problem
		(mostly near the back of the office); we should look
		for something rotting.

		ghudson: We need to move furniture Friday because of
		scheduled service on the radiator units.  jweiss:
		Before then people should take their personal stuff in
		the back of the office home.
	
		jered: Since binkley is not in use, its monitor is
		being used for cutter-john (the X terminal).

	MIT Computing Report:

		jweiss: moira ran out of UIDs.  This was fixed by
		removing ~4000 people who were deactivated and had
		never registered.

	Computer Services:
		
		ghudson: (This was mentioned in a past meeting but not
		recorded.)  I have talked to Lorraine and we've
		ordered a 4GB Seagate disk for AFS and a 32MB SIMM for
		anxiety-closet.

		ghudson: There was an afs outage this morning.  Its
		was constiant with rosebud losing contact with one its
		disks.  We can swap out the Micropolis 4GB disk for a
		Seagate, but it would be nice if we could confirm what
		the problem is first.

		jhawk: anxiety-closet has been crashing on "unknown
		async fault."  ghudson and wdc placed a service call
		to Sun today; they don't really know what's going on
		but suggeted applying the recommended patches for
		4.1.3_U1 or upgrading to 4.1.4.

		jweiss: I think that I did afs and other things last
		week.

		mhpower: The SIPB gavel is sometimes useful for things
		other than beginning and ending meetings.

		amsmith: Talk to me about tether for Linux, I've been
		getting lots of questions.

		jhawk: When you look at crash dumps, make sure you
		look at the dump for the right crash.

		djib: You know you are having a bad day when you
		destroy a summer's worth of code and a half summer's
		worth of data from a different lab in ten minutes.

	Other Other:

		jered: I got a new laptop.  It's cool.

		rjbarbal: I won two walkmen.  limor: By cheating
		rjbarbal: I also went to the beach, used SPF 30
		sunblock, and still burned.  SPF 45 is a good thing.

		yonah: looking in to getting a monitor repaired, if
		people have info.

		limor: If you know where I can get a monitor degaussed
		tell me.

		amsmith: No one should get a job whose primary duty is
		answering the phone.
