Membership elections. yoav: So what have you done for SIPB? kcr: Answer user questions, working on pine, cokecomm runs. jhawk: Do you plan to get SIPB a coke machine? kcr: I was thinking of that; the one in the zone can be a test of whether it works. marthag: What does the word applesauce mean? kcr: I'm not sure of it's origin but it's a recognition word. jered: Where was there a prominently featured can of apple sauce? kcr: I don't know. real answer: in the machine room, after it went to New York. Every how often do backups happen under multics? kcr: I have no idea. yoav: Neither do I. ghudson: 30 minutes. abbe: What SIPB services involve actual face-to-face interaction between SIPB people and users? kcr: walk-ins, mitvma accounts mkgray: Name as many things as you can which have hung from the ceiling (not currently up) kcr: People (rjbarbal), simpson's light thingy, a piece of foam, ... jhawk: In what ways can you see working for ops as conflicting with being a SIPB member? kcr: I'm not entirely sure I understand the question, but I can see conflicts of interesting arising. There are things I can see trying to do as a SIPB member which I shouldn't do as an ops person. jhawk: Do you have anything insightful to say on this issue? kcr: No. hartmans: How do you see the evolution of the relationship between I/S and SIPB? kcr: SIPB's takeover of DCNS is going well (laughter). mkgray: What, if any, SIPB services which you aren't currently involved with would you like to become involved with. kcr: AFS, rtfm yoav: Do you know names of 3 office/machine room machines? kcr: Yes. yoav: Would you kill an IS employee if we asked you to? kcr: Depends on the employee and circumstances. mkgray: Are there any SIPB members here you don't know? kcr: nygren nygren: Are there any SIPB projects you'd like to work on? kcr: outland, sipb lockers jweiss: What's the significance of a certain SIPB member hugging people while wearing floppy hat? kcr: A kindler gentler SIPB. cordelia: Are you familiar with frame or any of the other GUI text editors on athena? kcr: Moderately with ez; not frame. I know how to ask if anyone in the office can answer. jered: Can you give a criticism or two of the current SIPB? kcr: People hit other people with wrist-rests. It would be nice if what is acceptable were made clearer. Timely removal of the koosh bat would be nice. hartmans: A few weeks ago there was some discussion of nominating Karl. At that time you said you weren't sure if you wanted to be nominated, or if you would accept a nomination if it were offered. Have you come to a decision, and would you share some of that with us? kcr: Yes. I was being oversensitive to other people's behavior, and the problem was resolved. mkgray: If you are sitting alone in the office and the fire alarm goes of, what do you do? kcr: Grab the frisbee box... (laughter) marthag: what's the other name for it? kcr: Save in case of fire box. jweiss asks the question. kcr: I enjoy helping people and hanging out here, and I've been getting kicked out of the office more and more recently. Passes many-0-4+sgw. marthag: We have an awful lot of prospectives. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, SIPB isn't primarily a social group. being a prospective has certain rights and responsibilities, including: answering user questions (walk-in, phone), getting involved in SIPB projects- talk to members and maintainers. Office Report: jweiss: The office is a complete disaster area. People should clean up their own stuff. sgw: This is an abondoned tray of stuff. This is bad. sgw: What's up with opus? kcr: I was supposed to talk to brian murphy, but... marc: It was supposed to be fixed last friday, I've sent mail to Jeff, he said he'll lean on people. ghudson: This is bad because people haven't been able to do builds; at least two programs are broken because of it. limor: Quiche is unhappy. ghudson: My fault, I'll deal later. sgw: Can someone please go to the MCC and get more wristrests? MIT Computing Report: ghudson: There's a new dialup, netbsd.dialup.mit.edu. Don't recommend it to users unless you think they can deal with a bleeding edge service. Feel free to use it if you're willing to use an experimental service. hartmans: I'm beginning to look for testers for krb5 on machines they manage. rlogin/rlogind are useful (and user clients). Speak to sam if you're interested. Computer Services: ghudson: We have a 1 gig disk for the web server. It's slightly old but it should work. jhawk: Mail should've been sent to anxiety-maintainers first. jweiss: All of the machines and scsi devices which belong to SIPB in the machine room should now be labeled properly. Tell me if they aren't. SIPB Backup Report: jweiss: The AFS cell hasn't been backed up in a while. I was going to, but spent time cleaning up cruft instead. People who are now maintainers or think they can be maintainers and are interested in doing backups should talk to jweiss. All servers were backed up. Publications Report: jhawk: We have lots of documentation which should be gotten. someone should volunteer. ghudson explains what's involved. daveg volunteers. R/O Report: abbe: We had tours last thursday night. They went pretty well. We started out with 60 people, had 25 for jeff's talk. IAP Report: jhawk: I was approached friday about whether we want anything in the pre-guide. My name might be attached to classes on linux and netbsd. If you have other classes you're doing, tell me last friday. CokeComm Report: We have coke. Other: mhpower: Some people have noticed that classes have started. abbe: Doing lab assignments by neat little www forms is much neater than doing it by a hoard of course 2 people. yoav: Netscape died today. Don't send your .sig in mail through an "anonymous" mailer. marc: I have a java compiler which works under linux. Other Other: len18: Registry of motor vehicles sucks. rcaillef: If someone wants you to help move a coke machine and don't have a plan, the correct answer is "die". abbe: I'm only taking 42 units this term. rshah: It's been noted that this meeting is so boring that there's already a prospective snoring on the couch. abbe: 3 of them [the units] are thesis. kcr: If you're ever thinking of moving a coke machine, keep in mind that they weren't designed to be moved. bert: If anyone thinks abbe gloats too much and wants to do something about her, talk to me. jhawk: if you think coke machines weren't designed to be moved you're wrong.
