Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 03/3/97


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kretch.

In attendance were

Treasurer's Report:

	ghudson: We spent like $4000 today. (a Sparc4 and memory
		upgrades to Sparc classics)

Chairman's Report:

Office Report:

	jweiss: snork appears to have a dead monitor that has been
		dead for three weeks.  Do people think we should try
		to keep it or should it go away?

	mhpower: In late May we passed a motion that only 1RT worth of
		hardware should be in the office.  I move that if
		anyone wants to replace RT hardware they should be
		able to do so if the amount of hardware is
		monotonically non-increasing.

	marc: Is snork running any services?

	jweiss: It wasn't running anything besides possibly the SIPB
		RT build engine.

	[9-0-8] passes

	jhawk: Will some subset of jweiss and mhpower please deal with
		the property tagging issues? [jweiss shrugs]

	ghudson: Zorp is running 1.2.  There is an ethernet for
		granola so it could run both Linux and NetBSD, but the
		disk bought for this purpose is in ZSR.  However, zsr
		has another disk it could use.

	pipa: People should really pick up garbage and recycle cans.

	marc: There is no excuse at all to leave trays in the office.

	kretch: Also if you eat food, consider wiping up and cleaning
		up after yourself.

	mycroft: Stuffing trays and dirty plates is really uncool.

	jered: We should probably put the ceiling tiles back in place.

	mhpower: Could we take a straw poll on moving the SIPB minutes
		printouts since 1970 to storage elsewhere on campus if
		we could reasonably do so?

	mycroft: Do we have them electronically?

	kretch: We do not; we have paper minutes back to 1969.  We
		have approx 1.5 ft of space in the file cabinet of
		paper minutes that are not online.

	jhawk: Please be clear about alternatives in the poll.

	mhpower: Choices: you would object to moving the minutes; you
		would not object; you agree with jhawk that the poll
		is invalid. [5-10-jhawk]

	someone asks about OCR software.
	ghudson: We had difficulty finding useful free OCR software.

	kretch:  There are things that would not OCR well.  

	hartmans: I do not think any of the OCR software I have used
		would do what you want.

	jhawk: I don't think they can be OCRed but I have a scanner
		that can feed large volumes of paper at work.

	nygren: We have three new books: Java in a Nutshell, Linux in
		a Nutshell and Unix in a Nutshell.

MIT Computing Report:

	jweiss: I plan to do a patch release of the Sun system packs
		tonight which includes security fixes for talk and
		write and a bug fix so that mail doesn't get stuck on
		Suns.

	tlyu: ABS is dead!


Computer Services:

	ghudson: I believe last week I replaced the loner disk that we
		had on reynelda.

	jered: A few spot checks of 18.181 do not indicate that there
		are too many collisions.


SIPB Backup Report:

	pipa: I don't think everything was done last week.

	jered: The DLT drive works.

	hartmans: Yonah did an AFS backup.

Publications Report:

	amu: We appear to be out of the long version of iLinux Athena. 

	jweiss: I move to allocate up to $25 to get 50 copies of
		iLinux Athena. [second white-ballot.]  Jweiss is not
		dealing.

	pipa: We need coke.

	tlyu: Amy claims a run will happen on Wednesday.

Other:

	mycroft: I plan to put out a patch release of NetBSD this
		week.

	pipa: It is fairly official that the consultants are moving to
		the basement of building four.

	pipa: I ordered my brass rat.

	kretch: There is a noticeable addition to the dome on the MIT
		skyline part of the ring
