Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 05/05/97


The meeting was called to order at 19:29:30 by kretch.

In attendance were

Chairman's Report:

	jhawk: I object to the meeting starting early.

Office Report:

	kretch: Bobbi-harlow has a soundcard; it isn't connected to the cdrom
		output.
	jhawk: The right cable may have come with the cd drive.

	kretch: The floppy drive from bobbi-harlow is now on
		sipb-server-1 (the webserver-to-be).
	jhawk: I thought we were going to look into running 2.5.1 on the
		webserver.  Also, see sparc discuss meeting for how to
		netboot.
	jweiss: As for 2.5.1, Athena 8.1 will run it.

	hartmans: Kretch wants to combine project/office-machines and
		/afs/sipb/machine

MIT Computing Report:

	jhawk: (to jweiss about sending mail about serial #'s)
   		Maybe you should send mail documenting what should be
		done when we get new hardware.
	jweiss: I don't think it's a documentable interface.

	hartmans: Kerberos 5 patch level 1 was released at some point.  I
		think.

	mhpower: A user reportedly developed wrist pain after 6 minutes of
		using a quickstation.

Computer Services:

	yonah: Webmasters should speak to me about which OS we should install
		on the new server.
	danw: What is the migration plan?
	yonah: Either we put sunos on the new server, then try solaris on the
		old one before using it on the new one, or we just go to
		solaris on the new hardware all at once.

	ghudson: Move to allocate up to $600 for a sun floppy drive and cdrom
		for bobbi-harlow/sipb-server-1.

	jhawk: It seems like we might need iMachine Ordering.

	danw: It might also be good to make sure someone is dealing when we
		allocate money.
	yonah: I'll deal with the floppy/cdrom order.

	jhawk: Looks good.

R/O Report:

	kretch: We should start thinking about RO.  We get a number of
		early returns; don't remember but think 2.

	hartmans:  I might be convinced to volunteer as RO sucker.

	amsmith: I want to talk to marc after the meeting.

Other:

	jhawk: I think that IS's handling of the QuickStation
		commentary issue was unacceptable.

	hartmans:  If the question is SNA, the answer is *no*.

	yonah: We have a monitor for the new server.  Someone should think of
		something to do with it.
