Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 09/8/97 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kretch. In attendance were Voting members: nygren nathanw amu elliot djib yonah fubob kretch | pipa svalente Associate members: ghudson marc mhpower shabby tlyu srz jweiss kcr mwhitson leira | jhawk eichin Non-voting members: Prospectives: jewell jfmurphy Martin Peck xela | mdh yana99 jdaniel Guests: Treasurer's Report: '() Chairman's Report: kretch: We have an election for jdaniel next week and for jfmurphy the week after that. yonah: When is the secretary election? kretch: We need an EC vote to schedule the election, I was going to check to make sure how to do it correctly first. Push to EC meeting kretch: Move to hold a secretary election next week. (Seconded; passes 5-0-0) Pop to general meeting kretch: So we'll have a secretary election next week along with jdaniel's election. Office Report: ghudson: I move to increase the allocation of $50 for the Bloom County books to $100. (Seconded; white-balloted.) jweiss: I will deal with the pile of stuff sometime soon. ghudson: Someone could take down oliver and put another machine up there. ghudson: I move that we allocate up to $3500 for a new toy to replace limekiller. A new modern PC. mhpower: I think that this is a good idea to eventually do. We've been discussing getting a PC to replace one of the server machines; having an identical machine in the office as a hot spare might be a good idea. The spot where the new machine would go would be convenient for that. So we might want to discuss that first (on the mailing list) and table this motion. nygren: There's a range of what we can get. ghudson: It's probably appropriate to discuss a ceiling but not details. nygren: I would lean towards getting a somewhat more expensive machine. mhpower: Since there haven't been people jumping in, I move to table this discussion until the server issue is dealt with. Up to two weeks. ghudson: Matt's idea is probably valid; I withdraw my motion. Office cleaning report: kretch: Office cleaning happened this week. MIT Computing Report: mhpower: Fingering at mit.edu sometimes gives listings for people who don't have a traditional MIT afiliation; I think this is still under development. There is no truth to the rumor that if you finger mycroft you will get a reponse that contains the line "Title: whatever". Computer Services: xela: The SIPB-Athena slide ran; I'm told it was well-received. If we ever want to do it again, it might be good to have something the audience would laugh at. I'd like to request permission from Linux Journal to use a cartoon they have ("It said to install under Windows 3.1 or better, so I put it on my Linux box."). mhpower: At the 4:00pm showing on Sunday it was shown early enough that I'm not sure people were looking at the screen. jhawk: It doesn't seem to me that it's useful to run a slide for more than one weekend. SIPB Backup Report: kretch: The exabyte hasn't been dealt with yet, my fault. Publications Report: kretch: We're out of iLaTeX and Linux-Athena. Anyone know about Linux-Athena? amu: I don't know. kretch: Then we should print up some old ones. jewell: I sent mail to sendpubs about cluster cards. They said we should pick them up. jdaniel: I think Heather [Harrison] made them appear. kretch: sepherke was interested in writing a document on machine security. mhpower: I thought that Dan was working on that for IS. R/O Report: jewell: SIPB computer tours happened. We had about 50 people and seemed to be relatively successful. kretch: Thanks to Darrin. [Applause.] IAP Report: kretch: The deadline for the IAP Preview is within a couple of weeks. If you want stuff in it, send email to devil@mit.edu or hand in a description at 7-103 or something. mhpower: I'm thinking of holding an IAP activity on the subject of qmail internals. People who think that this is a silly idea should let me know. jhawk: I think it's a bad idea but I might be willing to assist in a session on why Qmail is bad for you and your network. CokeComm Report: '() Other: shabby: Nynex continues to suck in getting us [Grey 17] any sort of net connection. nathanw: Nynex sucks less for ILGs but netops sucks more. elliot: Actually Cisco sucks. marc: Diffie-Hellman died over the weekend. [Much cheering] (The patent expired.) srz: Matt Braun switched some class SIPB accounts to SIPBMEM or SIPBGST as appropriate. Other Other: jhawk: I still have $2s. jweiss: Since we seem to be doing Nynex sucks report: Nynex sucks with respect to keeping existing phone lines working. nathanw: My birthday is tomorrow. shabby: I believe Jamie Morris's birthday is Friday. jweiss: There will be post-meeting ultimate. The meeting was adjourned at 19:50ish. Minutes taken and submitted by ghudson.
