Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 10/6/97 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kretch. [Lou brought in two cartridges during the meeting - yay!] nygren: The only spare ethernet cards we have are 3c503 and an AT1700. They wont work for linux. Move to allocate $150 for a 3c509. [Seconded.] mycroft: I installed a card that belongs to me on granola, and it was only used to test the install once, so I took it back. nygren: We want to actually have a machine running it, not just use it for testing installs. jhawk: Is there a reason not to get a $20 NE2000? nygren: The 3c509 is better, and dorm people will be getting it. ghudson: Actually, they'll be using 3c900s. [Motion passes 10-0-5.] ghudson: There were more machine moves last week, to address scanner and mhpower concerns. However, lately there hasn't been a lot of consensus before moving things. Maybe someone should send mail to sipb-discussion to try to develop a consensus on what we want. yonah: It might be nice if someone wrote up what the various PCs in the office were supposed to be used for. jhawk: We're still missing a machine room key card. People should be a lot more careful... maybe we should start a log. jweiss: Given how long it's been missing, I would like to get it deactivated tonight if it doesn't turn up. tlyu: dkk and I noticed the air was getting stale a few days ago. He had to call Phys Plant to get things turned on. jhawk: Also, earlier one was blowing cold air and one hot. [Post-meeting: jhawk: Just to clarify, this was the one of the two air handlers in the back of the office, specifically the one next to the fridge, number 710865.] We never actually got the situation with Phys Plant resolved, so I'll follow up with them. [Post-meeting: jhawk: This was specifically in reference to the discussion on sipb-staff@mit.edu regarding AH9 et al.] Office Cleaning Report: danw: Move to get rid of the full height drive enclosures that don't have disks in them and have duct tape on the outside. ghudson: These are server enclosures, so it's up to the server maintainers. However, given that it's broken, let's just throw it away - we don't need a motion. jhawk: Do we have spare enclosures? ghudson: No, but we never have. jhawk: People should dust when they move machines. kretch: Some cleaning happened. MIT Computing Report: danw: MITnet sucks. If you ever send your password in the clear, you should assume that it's been sniffed. jhawk: MITnet sucks. It seems to be dropping small packets. mycroft: MITnet sucks. ghudson: If people who are having passwords sniffed because of transferring files between a Mac and AFS ask IS what to do, IS has no answer. If anyone has a good answer, talk to danw. nygren: Some linux people, RCCs, etc. are going to try do something about the password sniffing problems. There's a mailing list called net-defense which you can add yourself to. We're having a meeting on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon - I'll send mail. danw: Starting soon, standard procedure for dealing with machines doing password sniffing may be to shut off the drop, and keep it off until there's been a very long talk with the owner of the machine. jhawk: One of the ILG T1's is up. (Sigma Kappa) ghudson: There have been a lot of printers down in the w20 cluster. What should we tell users who come in here and ask to use ours? danw: If they destroy w20 printers so fast, we don't want them on ours. jhawk: Lou was out of town; things will probably be better now. kretch: Try to direct them to another printer. mycroft: Also, you can go try to fix printers when they tell you they're down. pipa: Try "cview printers" to find other ones. [Post-meeting: jhawk: It's worth remembering that you shouldn't assume the down printers have been reported. Best is to check the hotline discuss meeting (on menelaus), but it's better to report problems multiple times than not at all.] Computer Services: '() SIPB Backup Report: kretch: AFS hasn't happened yet. jhawk: fubob was dealing with ordering a new enclosure today... kretch: He's sent mail to get it ordered. mhpower: After moving btc I tested that we could still read tapes. jhawk: Backup maintainers should think about what might break when I upgrade btc to 8.1. I'm planning on doing it in the next week. Publications Report: jdaniel: iAthena is coming. jhawk: Move to allocate $50 for copies of iAFS. I mean it. jweiss: People should take empties down. A lot. Other: eichin: Someone at ABC News was trying to contact me last week. Apparently they're doing a History of the 20th Century, and the part about the 1980s may have a section on the Morris Worm. However, they haven't decided if it was dramatic enough. mkgray: MediaOne is now available in remote parts of Cambridge, and will gradually fill in the rest. Other Other: mycroft: Someone sent mail complaining they could not compile the NetBSD kernel with Visual C++ 5.0. mhpower: There's no truth to the rumour that Charles replied to the e-mail with the single word "fixed." jhawk: Kretch is a dork and has the highest negative CokeComm budget. mhpower: I received unsolicited commercial e-mail from founder of The Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-mail.
