Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 10/20/97


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kretch.

In attendance were

Chairman's Report:

	kretch: Who received the exabyte enclosure? We need the invoice
		that came with it.
	ghudson: I did something with the box, but I don't recall seeing
		the invoice.

Office Report:

	kcr: Move to extend snork's lifetime another week.
	[Seconded. Motion passes 4-1-many.]

	ghudson: We got two monitors today. They'll be replacing the VRC16's
		on zsr and limekiller.
	jweiss: Does the SIPB have plans to do with them?
	ghudson: No.
	kcr: Move to dispose of monitors at the discretion of the Office Czar
		in Charge of Special Operations.
	[Seconded. Motion passes 10-0-5.]
	
	jewell: It's been reported that the vt320 is working.

Office Cleaning Report:

	jweiss: People should remember to take down cans during office
		cleaning.

MIT Computing Report:

	ghudson: The patch release is going out to the dev cell tonight for
		both platforms.

Computer Services:

	amu: The new newtex locker is nearly ready. People should test it by
		doing the equivalent of:
		add -f -a -t afs -m /mit/newtex -e /afs/sipb/project/tex-new
	yoav: Isn't the newtex locker already experimental?
	pipa: Lots of people use the sty files.
	kcr: How long will the test period be?
	amu: About a week, barring any problems.
	kcr: I'll create filsys info for it.

	mhpower: There have been hundreds of changes to dandelion-patch, and
		the only site to have accessed it since then was the Backrub
		Web Spider on backrub.stanford.edu.

SIPB Backup Report:

	kretch: afs will happen tomorrow.
	jweiss: People have been lame w.r.t. putting the exabyte in the new
		enclosure.

Publications Report:

	jdaniel: I wasn't actually lame last week. The docs were here but
		no one took them out of the box. Other people shouldn't be
		lame.

	yonah: We're out of iLinux-Athena.
	kcr: Move to allocate up to $50 for iLinux-Athena.

	pipa: I'm counting money right now. I'm the new CokeComm, so people
		should write cheques to me, not amsmith.
	jewell: Can you improve the documentation on how much things cost?
	pipa: Yes.

Other:

	mhpower: If you send mail to people at the FSF, it will go to a
		machine at UMB, rather than to one at the AI lab.

	mhpower: If you traceroute to many machines at Harvard, it doesn't
		go via BBN anymore. It goes via 18.95.0.20.
	jhawk: This is the MIT-Harvard connection being provided by MediaOne.
		There's at least an OC3 and a fast ethernet in it, and
		possibly smaller bottlenecks.
	yoav: krb4 sucks. It wont let me have a machine name associated with
		a srvtab.

	mhpower: Move to change the SIPB theme song to Surftab USA.
	kcr: What's the current theme song?
	[kretch & fubob sing "S-I-P-B" to the tune of "YMCA".]
	
	pipa: Consultants should refrain from getting stuck together.

	bert: Go to the UA meeting if you want to protect your right to
		drink and compute.

	jhawk: I submitted my first totally untested patch today.
