Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 12/1/97 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kretch. In attendance were Voting members: yonah kretch katyking jewell jered amsmith amu svalente | jfmurphy Associate members: danw ghudson jhawk kcr mhpower eichin tlyu yandros srz rls klmitch Non-voting members: Prospectives: ocschwar xela Guests: brettv Treasurer's Report: Chairman's Report: danw: The chairman should get the minutes out sooner. Office Report: yonah: kretch is still a dork. jewell: Has anyone seen the second edition Stroustrup C++ book? jewell: The third edition of that book is out. mycroft also proposed that we buy _The Annoted C Reference Manual_. I move to allocate up to $80 to buy both. eichin: The annotated reference manual is cheaper than the standard, but the commentary has negative value. jewell: I amend the motion to include just the Stroustrup book, and lower the amount to $50. [White ballot.] xela volunteers. svalente: We got some memory for the Macintosh. People should install it. Office Cleaning Report: The office is marginal. We don't think it got cleaned much. MIT Computing Report: danw: One user returned from Thanksgiving break to find that her account had been broken into over Thanksgiving and used to launch some network attack, and then all her files were deleted. danw: Some people were ping-flooding the dialup subnet (18.184). tcpdump was lying to us so it took much longer to figure out what was going on. jhawk disbelieves, discussion offlines. ghudson: It's after drop date. Locker maintainers should probably avoid making serious changes. Computer Services: mhpower: Some people have noticed that zhm sometimes dumps core. Affects dandelion-patch and snork (under Linux). jhawk: AFS server kernels were updated to deal with the land.c vulnerability. jfmurphy: I talked to Karen Hersey from MIT Intellectual Property Council; mwhitson is answering some questions they had about the squid cache. jhawk: It would be good if we could get a written response which we could look at in the future for internal reference and citation purposes. Getting it orally is really bad. SIPB Backup Report: kretch: AFS didn't happen. It will tomorrow. tlyu: I heard a rumor that the new drive is not working. Backups were not done. Publications Report: We have publications. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: tlyu: I am not doing the Postscript class this IAP. I believe biomorph has offered to do it. kretch: The IAP Expo was today. We gave out flyers. I move that we allocate $18 to cover the cost of the flyers we handed out. [White ballot.] kretch: The IAP Guide comes out tomorrow. xela: I'd like to suggest that we put a slide up at the last two movies of the term saying what IAP classes we're offering. We could also run it during IAP. Total cost would be under $100. yonah: Why do we really care about publicizing our classes that much? [Some discussion about appropriateness of extra publicity.] jhawk: I think publicity is a good thing. yandros: Do we have that good an idea of who's teaching what classes yet? kretch: yes, it's on the flyers. jhawk: I move to allocate up to $100 to do slides at the last two LSC movies of the term to publicize our IAP classes. Alex volunteers to make the slides. [Motion fails 5-5-7.] srz and yonah clarify that they voted no because they didn't think it was worth the money. nygren: I would like help with my Introduction to Unix Software Development class. I'd like to add maybe an hour's worth of stuff on CVS and Autoconf. Talk to me. CokeComm Report: '() Other: mhpower: In the minutes of last week's meeting, my primary objection to the squid cache was omitted. It was that it's a service that once we started running, we would have to keep it running, and we probably have enough server maintainers. Other Other: jhawk: LSC Gencom in 3-270 at 8:00. svalente: In all likelihood, Redhat 5.0 became available today. Red Hat-Athena 4.2 is still not available yet. kcr: Sal, would you care to comment on the likelihood of Redhat-Athena 4.2 being available before NetBSD-Athena 1.3? kcr: It does appear that Redhat 5.0 is available at the moment. jered: Sprint PCS became active in our area and I just got a Q-Phone. yonah: I think Marc is still beating Jered. There may be a snowball fight in Killian after LSC Gencom. Shabby is in Minnesota and is coming back tomorrow. The meeting was adjourned at 19:46. Minutes taken and submitted by ghudson.
