Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 05/14/2001 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by fyfer. In attendance were Voting members: fyfer sly tibbetts dmaze arolfe nim ingolia kolya golem Associate members: jhawk jweiss cfox belmonte | yak srz tytso Non-voting members: Prospectives: aletta mwp lael Guests: Treasurer's Report: jhawk: People should be more careful with packing slips. You should save the packing slips, and don't open packages addressed to other people. tibbetts: How much money do we have left? sly: About $4000. We have until June 15 for requisitions to be processed, which means goods delivered. golem: Did you place the order for BOFH? sly: Yes. Chairman's Report: Office Report: tibbetts: Move to allocate $400 for a gong, but only if we're not spending money on a VMWare box. jhawk: I think that the gong would not prevent us from buying a VMWare box. Tying them together will cause confusion. tibbetts: I drop the condition. I just won't buy the gong if we don't have the money. golem: SIPB should have a gong. jweiss: I request that people making frivolous motions wait until after the serious ones. tibbetts: OK. jhawk: There was a serious discussion about the gong. I suggest we table this. tibbetts: Sure. jweiss: Move to allocate $800 to activate two ethernet drops beyond the ones we already allocated for. It's reasonable to expect that we'll get two new UTP machines over the summer. The extra drops seems like a good idea. Also, there's no recurring cost for the drops after June 1. golem: Which machines are currently AUI machines? jweiss: There are roughly 9 in the office. quiche, bart, lnitp, binkley, mkc, bill-the-cat, bobbi-harlow, steve-dallas, yaz, thornhump, multics. There are drops in that part of the office that may be activated. We'll figure that out after the meeting. [jweiss allocation: $800 for drops] yak: The zip drive in banana-sr seems to be dead. The Apple system profiler doesn't see it. fyfer: I also heard that the floppy drive wasn't working last week. tibbetts: The floppy only works when plugged directly into the machine, but not when connected to the keyboard. sly: We got the Mac over the summer, so it's probably still under warranty and we should get it fixed soon. sly: We can activate several drops for the price of the gong, which seems a better use of our money. tibbetts: But we don't have any more to activate. jweiss: We won't actually know until after we finish looking. tibbetts: I withdraw the gong thing. jweiss: Will you [tibbetts] look into the VMWare machine? tibbetts: Yeah. jhawk: The Kinesis keyboards are living in the left monolith. Office Cleaning Report: jweiss: Take down bottles and cans and more bottles. MIT Computing Report: jhawk: We still have no OC3. I'd be impressed if we have it by June 15. sly: Network Security will be sending emails to people who connect to the dialups unencrypted. You may get questions. People can talk to helpdesk with further questions. Computer Services: jweiss: We declared the Linux installer to be in production. There has been discussion about desupport dates for NetBSD-Athena and SIPB Linux Athena, which will be sometime between now and June 15. golem: Who will declare a desupport date? jweiss: Someone will send mail. There has been discussion on the relevant lists. I'll make sure it gets talked about sometime soon. tibbetts: I was going to send the NetBSD mail soon. jhawk: Send a draft before you send it out. fyfer: We have the linux installer documentation. Feel free to give it out. SIPB Backup Report: Publications Report: tibbetts: We're light on netnews. fyfer: We always are. Orientation Report: aletta: In my Public directory, there is newflyer.tex. I'm merging the flyers that Richard and alex_c wrote. Help is welcome. This is for the summer mailing. IAP Report: CokeComm Report: jweiss: Guess what you should take down. jhawk: An alarming number of non-redeemable bottles have been placed in the redeemable tub. srz: We're low on Dr. Pepper. Send mail to cokecomm if you care. sly: If you take one of the last three or four cans of a beverage, please put more in. Other: golem: I'm disappointed in our handling of the gong situation. They're more exciting than netdrops. fyfer: Flamethrowers are exciting, but we shouldn't get one. jhawk: If we got a gong, we could take it to the activities midway. But it might caused us to get placed with the music groups. Other Other: dmaze: One of my 6.170 groups brought me cookies. aletta: I got my brass rat. golem: I haven't slept for weeks. It's obvious. jhawk: Frisbee after the meeting on the oval. The meeting was adjourned at 17:49. Minutes taken and submitted by arolfe.
