Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 09/24/2001


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by fyfer.

Treasurer's Report:
	nim: I have no clue how much money we have.
	hartmans: How much have you taken?
	nim: So far, none.
	nim: Soon there will be a "Pending for Treasurer" folder in the drawer.

	nim: Move that SIPB dispose of the very old and useless
		financial records that are more than 10 years old and do
		not involve equipment we still have.
	jhawk: Are you running out of space?
	nim: Yes.
	keithw: Can we archive them somewhere?
	sly: I was given free reign as treasurer to do this, but I
		lamed.  
	tibbetts: I encourage nim to withdraw the motion because
		officers shouldn't need permission for this sort of
		thing.
	hartmans: In general, I think retaining information is good, I
		point out that there are advantages to getting rid of
		information.  
	keithw: I would hope that nim would consider saving a sample of
		old documents in consideration of the historical
		qualities of these documents.
	sly: There is nothing of value.
	xela: We should store them in Keith's room.
	jhawk: I object to a white ballot.

Chairman's Report:
	fyfer: There will be a membership election for aletta next week.

Office Report:
	jhawk: I induced the treasurer to overspend my stapler alottment
		by less than $10.  I move to retroactively increase the
		allocation.

	keithw: I think jhawk should eat the $10 so as not to set a bad
		precedent.  I'll pay him personally but SIPB shouldn't.
	belmonte: Will jhawk have to sign a confidentiality agreement?

Office Cleaning Report:
	jweiss: Take down bottles.

MIT Computing Report:
	hartmans: There were network upgrades.  We're now on a router
		than should be cool.  Last night, though, there was very
		odd behavior- for some machines in w20, there was
		significant packet loss to machines that were off this
		network.  If you see symptoms like that again, collect
		as much data as you can.  We did find that rebooting the
		machines seemed to help.
	jhawk: traceroute is broken in the new router.
	jweiss: w92 and w20, sipb and ops server subnets in w20 are on
		the new router.  I think there's another new router in
		e19.  
	keithw: Is there a general summary of the recent network
		problems?
	jweiss: Much is by the various worms and viruses, both filling
		the network and hosing the router's CPU.

Computer Services:
	keithw: I talked to Hal about my proposal for 802.11 roaming.
		It appears that MIT doesn't have a decision making
		apparatus.  The current status is that some people from
		Microsoft are looking into it.  Some people from HP and
		the HP-MIT Wireless Lab are looking into it but haven't
		responded to email.
	tibbetts: Have we heard back that they are thinking about it, or
		not heard back?
	keithw: They are thinking about it?
	tibbetts: Move to allocate $300 for a second PIII 1GHz for the
		VMWare machine.

	yak: Is there any actual sign that it will ever run VMWare?
	tibbetts: Yes, because I'm not hacking on the installer anymore
		because I hate it.
	jhawk: Ideally we'd not like to buy it until everything is
		working.  Can you scope the price difference between now
		and the future?
	tibbetts: No.
	keithw: We could allocate now and not buy until later.

	kolya: The bandwidth limit on news disappeared.

	hartmans: The Gartner Group was claiming that companies should
		seriously evaluate moving away from IIS unless it is
		rewritten.
	aatharuv: Quantum is having a discount on O'Reilly books: Buy 2,
		get one free.
	keithw: As of 1997, the undergraduate major of Parks,
		Recreation, Leisure and Fitness passed electrical
		engineering in popularity in America. 
	jhawk: Austin Grill is closed.
	tibbetts: The failure mode of X on the VMWare machine is really
		trippy.
