Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 10/15/2001 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by fyfer. In attendance were Voting members: fyfer arolfe aatharuv aletta golem foley | tibbetts nim keithw kolya Associate members: sly ingolia jhawk | jweiss Non-voting members: Prospectives: mwp jtu emarcus | xela Guests: Treasurer's Report: jhawk: Our IS financial person has changed to Ken Higgins. Chairman's Report: fyfer: We're having a membership election for emarcus. arolfe: What sorts of things have you done? emarcus: I ran tours this year. I'm working with aletta and ike on iAthena. I answer questions and have been around. jhawk: Do you think things might be problematic if we take goods for services on a regular basis? emarcus: Yes. It would be more of a problem if there was an expectation on our part. As long as there aren't expectations on either end, it's not a big deal. golem: Name three office heads and their IP addresses. emarcus: I don't know IP addresses. golem: Neither do I. emarcus: opus, csw, pickled-herring. sly: Name three services that SIPB provides that you can't fix and who you'd call to fix them. emarcus: Webzephyr, jdaniel. discuss on charon, some list that I don't know. AFS, try zephyr since it's important if it dies. jhawk: The canonical pronunciation is 'charon'. stella hostname might tell you the contact information. aatharuv: Name something that SIPB isn't doing but should and could be doing. emarcus: Maintaining documentation more regularly. jhawk: Name me please. emarcus: Max. gif: Pick someone in the room that you don't know and name them. emarucs: You too are Max. mwp: I'm Martyn. jhawk: I want a unique name. emarcus: You gave up jhawk, it's not my fault. tibbetts: What sucks the most about MIT and why is it SIPB's fault? emarcus: There's a high learning curve for Athena and SIPB could help with that. fyfer: If you become a member, what would you encourage prospectives to do? emarcus: Documentation and tours again. I would encourage prospectives to be in the office and come to meetings before they do a project. gif: Name two things that have previously hung from the ceiling. emarcus: A slinky and bert's hair. golem: If the save in case of fire box were empty, what would you put in it? emarcus: A kite. There's some interesting historical stuff in there. jhawk: How much effort should we put into debugging intermittent problems? emarcus: It depends on how much they affect users. If AFS was dead 1 in 10 minutes, that'd be a high priority. alex_c: How hard should we smack jhawk for being anal retentive and annoying? yak: The questions have degenerated. sly: Move that jweiss ask the question. jweiss: Why do you wnat to be a SIPB member? emarcus: I don't like being locked out. I'd like to be here for more meetings and have a better sense of what's going on. I sometimes punt meetings as a prospective if there's an election. <13-0-0, emarcus is a member> Office Report: golem: It's full of pizza. fyfer: Prof. Billey sent it to us for helping her with a linux-athena machine. jhawk: deathtongue has the office root password. golem: I want to allocate money for plastic utensils. jhawk: Cokecomm usually buys them. golem: Is there a reason for him to do so? I expect to spend $20. Move to spend $20 on plastic utensils and mini-moos. keithw: Move that he withdraw and that we just get the stupid spoons. sly: Get rid of the mini-moos. tibbetts: I want to get Chris some mini-moos. golem: No mini-moos. jweiss: Friendly amendment to spend this from the auction fund. jhawk: We don't have to state that to do so. <15-1-2> [golem allocation: $20 for untensils] yak: The root password on the Mac is the office root password. The password on the guest account is guest and the sipb0 password is the normal one. keithw: Does the mac still have AFS problems? yak: No. It only hangs for a couple of minutes now. keithw: Why? yak: I don't know. I want to upgrade. tibbetts: I move to allocate for a CDROM drive for the Mac. The current one is broken. I don't know how much. sly: It's been brought up for some time that it's broken. Is it still under warranty? It's less than a year old. keithw: Fifty cents to bribe tibbetts to deal. fyfer: Can someone look up the warranty info. sly: We have a receipt. keithw: I'll do it. tibbetts: I withdraw my motion. sly: zorp is sick and we called Compaq. tibbetts: The CDRs that we bought a while ago were misdirected but are now here. The ones that we got before don't really belong to us. But since no one has complained, we have 100 CDRs. alex_c: Move to allocate $30 for "Python Programming on Win32". keithw: Who's going to read it? alex_c: Me. [alex_c allocation: $30 for book] Office Cleaning Report: golem: The office is a pit. aatharuv: Cleaning happened. MIT Computing Report: Computer Services: alex_c: The kludgy linux installer has been seen in the wild. SIPB Backup Report: Publications Report: fyfer: Still working on getting iLaTeX. They gave me $750. jhawk: Did you have to give them your SSN? keithw: Yes. It is my legal opinion that I had to. jhawk: Other is for SIPB related things. Other Other is for things that aren't. Other Other: tibbetts: pants. tibbetts: My computer at work is haunted. Fortunately, you can buy one in an hour these days. jhawk: People who bought t-shirts- they're like shipped. golem: I upped my computer budget to $300. fyfer: I'm about to be inflicted with AIX. That brings the variety of machines that I maintain to everything but HPUX. xela: Being a Sun customer is turning out to be painful. I've spent two weeks trying to give them $450. The meeting was adjourned at 19:59. Minutes taken and submitted by arolfe.
