Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 03/18/2002


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tibbetts.

	nim: Money.  Yeah, we have some, probably.
	golem: Did you embezzle it all yet?
	nim: Yes.

Chairman's Report:

Office Report:
	jhawk: The new hole punch, the 550, sucks ass.  It doesn't
		punch through stacks of paper, and leaves little dots
		everywhere.  The vendor does not do repair.  Straw
		poll for whether to trade it in for a 440, or just buy
		an additional 440?  <4 for swap, 2 for buy, much wavering>
		Motion to trade the 550 back in for a 440.

	golem: Object - We should get a better one with a higher
		number that costs more money.

	belmonte: Note, for only $209.99, we could get a 650.
	tibbetts: If we're going to spend real money, we should get
		one that cuts off arms.
	belmonte: Ah, that would be the McGill Metal Products Model
		580 Heavy-Duty 3-Hole Power Punch, which can drill up
		to 300 sheets for $249.99.

	tibbetts: I'd like to allocate $350 for books on:
		shell programming, ruby, ocaml, ML, Haskel, postgres, DNS&BIND.

	tibbetts: At my discretion.

	yak: I've recently come into possession of a quantity of

	jhawk: Sure.

	jhawk: csw was fucked in a truly interesting way.  We're still
		not sure why, but also the keyboard is broken.
	dmaze: When office hardware is broken, members should not be
		discouraged from mailing hotline about it.
	jhawk: Make your point.
	golem: Move that jhawk is jhawk.

	aatharuv: We have a Pismere machine again, although I had to
		temporarily swap video cards with quiche to do it.
		Haven't swapped back yet.  


Office Cleaning Report:
	tibbetts: There's a jhawk in the office.  He's not moving.


MIT Computing Report:
	tibbetts: There was a like a DNS outage earlier.
	cana: Don't believe you.  There was, however, a fileserver outage
		earlier though, of cly, which was unavailable for
		about half an hour.
	fyfer: It's because of the name.
	jhawk: I'd like to know why the outage occurred.
	cana: When we debug it, we'll tell you.


Computer Services:
	alex_c: I'm thinking of spending lots of SIPB money to start a
		longjobs service.  People should tell me if this is a
		bad idea.
	cana: What's the value add over the I/S longjobs service?
	<several voices>: I/S longjobs exists?
	cana: Yes.  The jobs need to be for academic purposes.  Not
		research.  It's paid for with academic-colored money.
	alex_c: That would be a reason to have a SIPB longjobs, then.

		wireless.  It's where my desk is.  It's pretty

	dmaze: I went to Haverill today, to buy stamps and mail a
		bill.
	tibbetts: Why all the way to Haverill?
	dmaze: Because I could.
	tibbetts: How did you get there?
	dmaze: Commuter rail.

	tibbetts: I saw a presentation today about a system for
		automatically building/designing secure systems.  It was
		unfortunately named Athena.

	nim: Apparently there's supposed to be an auction after the
		meeting.  But jweiss is trapped in his office.
	yak: He'll be here eventually.

	cana: Radiskull hate snow.
