Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 04/1/2002

The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tibbetts.

	tibbetts: No treasurer this week.
	hartmans: He did things for me, it was good.

Office Report:
	jhawk: There's now a new CD drive in the Mac courtesy of
		Brad.  It works.

	jhawk: it was observed that the office has no small torx -
		there are occasions where people have wanted them.
		Motion to allocate $20 for small torx drivers, size T6
		and up.

	tibbetts: I want to allocate $200 to buy non-crappy
		powerstrips to replace all the crappy powerstrips.

	tibbetts: I want to buy ones better than the ones we have now.
		Good ones are about $20.

	tibbetts: The other day I allocated money to buy a bunch of
		books.  In the process, I discovered more books on
		Haskell, ML, and functional programming that I want to
		get.  I want to allocate $225 for four books.

	golem: We should get new bookshelves.
	tibbetts: We could get the kind on wheels that sandwich together.

	xela: Weren't we going to get new ones years ago?
	jweiss: One of the things on that center shelf is a bunch of
		broken disks.  They may be under warranty.  Anyone
		want to do the work?

		Move to get rid of the broken 1GB disks at the
		discretion of the Office Czar in Charge of Special
		Operations.

	tibbetts: I'd like to move to keep the 1MB disks that are
		holding up monitors because they're good monitor
		stands.

	sly: Monitor stands are cheap.
	tibbetts: These are free.  And they're sturdy.
	hartmans: Using disks as monitor stands seems trashy.
	tibbetts: And...?

	jweiss: I'm still planning to get rid of the ones that aren't
		holding up monitors.

Office Cleaning Report:

MIT Computing Report:
	jweiss: We believe we've solved the problem with the
		networking of the black Dells.  Please report further
		problems, unless the machine hasn't upgraded to 9.0.26.

	tibbetts: It has been frequently observed that networking in
		dorms sucks. Discussion recently led to the
		conclusion that the major reason these problems aren't
		being solved is that the people with money and
		resources don't realize there is a problem. So I think
		that SIPB should have a subcommittee to talk to the
		relevant people and try to improve dorm networking.
	golem: No one's going to complain if you do so.
	hartmans: Do you want to just do it, or do you want us to move
		that you do it?
	tibbetts: I don't know, actually.
	golem: No motions!
	tibbetts: Anyone want to chair it?

	tibbetts: golem is interested, too.  People should contact rax
		and alex.

Computer Services:
	jweiss: If there is anything anyone wants to buy for the
		machine room and you haven't told me yet, you are
		lame.  Send me email.  Tonight.  Before you go home.
	marc: What about racks?
	jweiss: I'm still working on racks.
	tibbetts: We could buy a whole magazine of Netra X1s to deploy
		as needed...

	golem: Multics actually had its first outage last week.  We
		should get a hot spare.

	jweiss: Ops is having someone come in to clean the machine
		room.  SIPB need only be aware.

		what to spend it on.  Urge to spend money rising!
	tibbetts: We could get a gong.

	arolfe: Miramax (Sucks!)

	sly: Training Day will be shown on Friday and Sunday at LSC 
		in place of Iris.
