Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/6/2003


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tibbetts.

In attendance were

Treasurer's Report:

	I got money from another organization to go to Louisiana.

Chairman's Report:

	nothing

Office Report:

	jhawk: I think we should have a digital camera.
		Existing cameras like the indycams and the 35mm camera
		that people haven't used in years, aren't useful.
	golem: I don't object, but the arguments are the same as those
		against getting a laptop, so if we get one we should
	straw poll: 6-1
	jhawk: I'll investigate and make a motion next week

	tibbetts: I'd like to move to allocate $300 for Edward Tufte's
		three books, on graphics.

Computer Services:

	tibbetts: what services do we have that need work over IAP?
	hartmans: if SIPB debian doesn't release over IAP, I'll try to
		scuttle it.
	arolfe: rtfm upgrade

	hartmans Garry is emptying reynelda in preparation for
		upgrading it.  We should also think about upgrading to
		OpenAFS 1.2.8; I don't know if Garry is thinking
		about this.
	tibbetts: Didn't we just upgrade it
	hartmans: no that was another machine
	jweiss: we upgraded the OS on the other two machines, this is
		a hardware upgrade

	golem: Someone should explain the recent www slowdown.

	arolfe: homemade Star Trek episodes served via it were /.'d Certain
		file types get re-directed to emf.mit.edu which is
		rate-limited, and the Star Trek stuff was added to this
		category.

	jweiss: charon should get upgraded too.


	tibbetts: The VM dialup machine, steve-dallas, needs help
		debugging a 2.4 kernel smp problem, talk to me if you
		can help.  tytso has offered but not been around
		recently.

	tibbetts sipb-rt also need to be finished and start getting
		used, but I'm not sure we really need help.

	golem: My lab's backups are incompetent and flux.

	tibbetts: I used windows for the first time in years and it
		sucked. I think I'll wait a few more years before
		trying again.
