Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 05/12/2003

The meeting was called to order at 07:30pm by ctl.

Treasurer's Report:

Chairman's Report:
	jtu:	ASA doesn't stop you from adding more than 6 people to
		the non-financial signature list.  All of the EC is down for
		the financials.  Chairman doesn't care, since nothing
		bad will probably happen.

Office Report:
    	seph:   lying-naked-in-the-periwinkle's monitor is taking up
		desk space and interfering with the monitor next to
		it.  Moves to replace it with a small LCD display.
        Discussion between seph and hartmans about sending mail first
		before proposing the motion.
	marc:	Does it improve service?
        Has this come up before?  A suggestion was made to have it be
		a second monitor.
        marc:   Friendly amendment to get a monitor with an analog
		input, because it will be cheaper, and we have already
		have an analog video card.
	Discussion to add an adaptor.
        seph:   Move to approve $450 for a small LCD monitor that will
		fit in the window space and connect to LNITP.

	jhawk:  Our digital camera showed up.  It's in the key drawer.
        
	hartmans: User was in here this week with a sad story of a
		laptop that had died.  If somebody felt motivated,
		they could buy a USB to IDE converter and an IDE to
		IDE laptop converter and be the best friend to people
		who have messed up their laptop.
	ocschwar: Some people have also lost laptops to theft.  People who
		have Windows clue should write a paper on how to
		back up data to Athena, so that users can click on a
		single button when they connect to Athena and backup
		their laptop.  This would lower the blood pressure of
		people who come up with laptop issues.
	golem:  Some people would probably point out what's wrong with
		that proposal.
	There wasn't a machine, so this didn't really go anywhere.
	Hopefully somebody will pick this up.

MIT Computing Report:
	golem:  Ha ha.  We still having computing, just not network.
		Who needs network?

	jhawk:  There was an external routing failure due to the
		external router running out of memory, and due to
		configuration issues it did not reboot automatically.
		Network group should have this fixed now.

	seph:   There was an outage of the external mailhubs today.

Computer Services:
	golem:  Our lockers still seem to work when the rest of the
		infrastructure works.

	ike will send mail about SIPB pine, and how to stop offering services.

	ocschwar is writing a quick and dirty web diary service.  Somebody
	should kill him now.

Publications Report:
	jenselby ordered 15 copies each of iAthena and iMatLab.

Orientation Report:
	glasser: We have pieces of paper to send to the incoming
		frosh.  If no complaints, they will go through as is.
		Made a few changes from last year, such as removing
		Usenet from the top ten things that we do, and
		changing some software issues.  golem looked at them
		and they looked pretty good.

Other:
	sam:    Somebody wanted to use our PC here to do his day trading since
		his day trading computer broke down.  We could not
		commit to keeping the office open the whole day.  Sam
		was amused.
	golem:  Should we provide day trading services?

	seph is in Cambridge nowadays.
