Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 6.2.03 The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by golem. In attendance were Voting members: rax tibbetts golem arolfe foley merolish | ike Associate members: ocschwar lnemzer xela marc Prospectives: Guests: kant Treasurer's Report: tibbetts: In a sign from God, I was thrown from my office by a carpet cleaner so I am here. It was a human. According to Ken Higgins our budget is $38000. We have expended $33000. We have committed $2.6, leaving $2.4 left to be spent. Of that we have outstanding allocations for at least $500 probably more like $700. It is my suggestion that we spend $1500 if we have something to spend it on. tibbetts: You've been doing the right thing with the treasurer's drawer but not sent me mail. golem: You should make a script that sends messages that you run when you got a packing slip. tibbetts: As opposed to sending mail? xela: Use RT. tibbetts: I keep planning to. Chairman's Report: tibbetts: I stopped showing up when you became chair. I used to heckle the chair. golem: I have something to fucking say for Chairman's Report. Thank you very much. Next Monday being commencement and all I may not be in the office. Whoever is there next meeting will have to take over and run the meeting in my absence. rax: haHA! merolish: I nominate glasser for membership. merolish: He partially worked on iAthena ike: But also got sick. And he installed stuff in outland and pays attention a lot. merolish: He did something for orientation- hartmans: He did the mailing. ike: He's young, he's motivated, foley: Nubile... <7-0-0, motion passes> Office Report: xela: Move we spend $1600 on two decent flatpanel displays to replace two of the large monitors in the office. hartmans: Is $800 a reasonable price for a flatpanel? marc: Nice 18" or 19". rax: I would like to hear other proposals for this money before voting. ike: Do I have other proposals? No. golem: Are there other proposals for this money? tibbetts: Not the one for the window. foley: I was going to make a proposal for a color inkjet printer, but I think it will be shouted down. golem: We have been fucking talking about getting these for three years now. tibbetts: We could get some from Dell for $500. marc: Lots of people say they are not very good. golem: We will not pursue foley's proposal. marc: Who will execute this in the next four days? xela: I don't know how. Tibbetts? tibbetts: I will cause it to happen before the end of the fiscal year. [tibbetts allocation: $1600 for flatpanels] ike: What happened to the gong? Who owns it? Will they do it? tibbetts: It is outstanding, Aletta, and I think she is going to do it. It is hard to find a gong. ike: I am scheming about office redecoration. I have some plans. First some archival then dedecoration then seeing what we want to do. marc: Like what? Bulletin boards, furniture? ike: Bulletin boards and things hanging from the celiing. xela: We passed a motion five years ago to get rid of that bookcase. tibbetts: Ike, congratulations on not making a motion. golem: Just do whatever you damn please with the office. I give you my permission. hartmans: If you believe there may be objections, send mail to sipb-office not bring it up at a meeting. I will talk to you offline. ike: I don't plan to give priority to the objections of really crufty cruft. hartmans: It is in your interest not to piss off people who will come to a meeting. golem: Decide what you want to change, send an email, wait two days... ike: OK. ike: If people want to hear about it - golem: Use email. foley: I got the negative cleaning supplies. Be careful with the tetrachloroethelyne. It's extremely volatile. golem: It is very poisionous. foley: I swapped the scanners and tried to parallelize the scan process and make vuescan crash less. golem: I've been working on the labeler again. It got everything except I can't get the goddamned thing to tell me the width of the tape that is in it. It knows. But it will not tell you. tibbetts: You need a UROP to stand next to the machine and look through the window. Office Cleaning Report: merolish: Does the fish still work? tibbetts: There have been no messages to -c ingolia in a long time. golem: I didn't notice it was broken. We should have a program that watches the fish. tibbetts: jhawk is working on it. tibbetts: My office is being cleaned right now. ocschwar: We have rodents in the office. golem: They're cute. foley: This office is way too dusty. If you clean a negative, it gets dusty again. golem: When the office is vacuumed, write the date on the whiteboard. MIT Computing Report: hartmans: We released Kerberos 1.3beta2 last week. People should test it, or else people will use it and you will be sad. hartmans: The krb5 interrealm zephyr code has been deployed on all the zephyr servers. ike: When will other @people come back? hartmans: Never. We peer with the same people we have always peered with. foley: CMU. Computer Services: tibbetts: I'm turning into cruft. There's this VMWare thing. If someone else wants to play with it, they should talk to me. Otherwise it will shamble on like a zombie. hartmans: Do you not want to maintain it? tibbetts: I don't want to maintain it badly. SIPB Backup Report: Publications Report: golem: Nothing has changed. Orientation Report: hartmans: When do we need to sign up for a midway booth? golem: I should find a sucker. What do we even do at the midway? tibbetts: The last three years I have been there. We recruit dozens of people and then fail to follow through with this. This does not indicate that we should not go to the midway, but it may indicate sometyhing else. hartmans: Keep in mind that before deciding that midway is abd, compare to other groups and see how many people they retain that they attracted at the midway. Be realistic in your expectations. IAP Report: CokeComm Report: Other: golem: The optical mice have this fascinating failure mode. If you move them too fast, they go backwards. arolfe: Whoah! golem: Everyone's moving their mice now! lnemzer: I have the previous rev of the mouse and it does not do that. marc: Send them back. Other Other: tibbetts: My company got seed round funding. This fits into my plan for becoming cruft. Current working name is Grassy Pond. We do not have the .com. ike: merolish's hair is getting dangerously long. golem: I have moved out of my old apartment and now live in Limbo. My correct address is my office. I do not actually sleep there most of the time until this September. golem: I am in distinct danger of becoming a DDR monkey. I have reached the 8-foot level. I practice all the time, all day, every day. I don't really do this work thing anymore. I decided research is for pussies. Sucks: ike: FCC! They said yes to larger conglomeration of mass media. xela: Variety in media? You don't need that! The meeting was adjourned at 7:55. Minutes taken and submitted by rax.
