Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 6.30.2003 The meeting was called to order at 7:31 by golem. Isn't it a different budget? golem: Keith's goal is clearly to expire the gong allocation. jhawk: We need to apply extremely precise scrutiny to this. I move to divide the question between regular allocations and regular allocations. keithw: We are in the middle of a hostile amendment. jhawk: I think it would be withdrawn. golem: David, if the move to separate the two questions passed... I don't believe you shoudl accept his motion. glasser: Is he trying to amend my amendment? golem: he is trying to solve your problem in a way that would make use have to fail or pass the gong allocation again. glasser: I like my way. jtu: What is the current information? rax: The gong is a stupid thing to buy but we should decided to do it so we should. keithw: They ghave had plenty of time. ike: It recently changed hands and I am less lame than aletta. <8-3-2, amendment passes.> keithw: I withdraw my motion. glasser: I move that we cancel all outstanding allocations except for the gong allocation and office supplies preceding the fiscal year. golem: We don't want to expire today's. rax: We should consider what we are getting rid of before getting rid of it. jhawk: I think it would be easier to make it one month ago. glasser: Not including the meeting a month ago. <9-0-4, motion passes> Chairman's Report: Office Report: jhawk: We are out of floppies and woven bandages. Furthermore the current set of officers don't seem to have spending bits in SAP. golem: Don't floppies count as office supplies? jhawk: This is nowhere near as convenient as clicking buttons on the web. golem: Tibbetts doesn't? jhawk: He does but he is nto here. Perhaps i was not specific enough. ike: I was planning to mvoe another head up onto the monolith. I will send mail. golem: The HowToAGMIT people have been propagandizing me and I bought in saying we should buy some advertising to support their ifna publication and to advertise SIPB. Particularly frosh coming to MIT could be more aware of SIPB's existence. I move we spend $250 on a half-page advertisement in HTGAMIT. keithw: Is that the price? golem: It is the early bird price. keithw: It seems like a lot of money. HTGAMIT is given out for free to frosh? Oh. golem: THey charge like $10 to other people. They claim they are not making any money. How do you judge if it is a lot of money? It is higher visibility than the tTech. jhawk: Is this 8.5x5"? rax: Yes. jhawk: That's kind of small. And I thought zoz would give us an ad for free. golem: No, he said he would do the design for free. That is different from the fee for the ad. keithw: Can we spend this fiscal year money on it? golem: I don't think so, no. jhawk: Not without Herculean efforts. golem: I don't think that will happen. jtu: How much again? golem: $250. Full page for $450. I chose a number I thought was reasonable. keithw: I don't think it is worth it except to support HtGAMIT. golem: I think a lot of frosh don't use Athena and there is not much awareness. alex_c: I didn't walk by SIPB for the first four years I was here. keithw: I don't mind the money but I don't thinkw e should kid ourselves. golem: I think this is a fine use of our money and we don't do as much "outreach" or propagandizing as we should. jhawk: Maybe this is not relevant but I suspect it would be more effective if we set up with msuci and balloons in the student center or reserved space in Lobby 7. I am not volunteering. golem: Implanting all freshmen with a brain chip would also work. jenselby: I think that HtGAMIT is worthwhile. I would have like to have gotten one, but my year did not have one; in editing for it I found out a bunch of things I didn't know. <8-1-4, motion passes> jhawk: This morning sly noticed that the new blue mice are disentigrating (sp) I wanted to see wyho liked them vs disliked them. glasser: I like optical mice but not these. Though they are sometimes a step up and some way a step down. jhawk: Apparently the rubber crap is coming off. golem: I'll ask sly later. jhawk: People who like these particular mice? Dislike? Indifferent? 3-3-5. Per Angie's zephyr I move $100 to get some other mice at her discretion. int18: Can we get logitech? keithw: Friendly amendment to make it sly and jhawk's discretion and to make them have to agree jointly. keithw: Then I make it a hostile amendment. golem: We have to vote on it. I behaved a little rashly. The issue that came of it I think is that there is no clear procedure that people want to make changes to the office and others don't. Perhaps we could take into consideration. rax: We could have a form you have to fill out. "Do you have a 27 B-6?" merolish: I don't see why this is so ridiculous. keithw: The SIPB office arrangement has survived for 30-odd years and when we have disagreements we resolve them in this format and I don't think we need a new system. jhawk: I suggest we close debate. golem: Are you going to make a motion? merolish: I'm just going to drop it. Office Cleaning Report: ike: It's getting cleaner, really. I might wreak my bulletin board havoc soon. jhawk: The janitorial staff came in and dusted everything. It was pretty disconcerting. they're never odne that before. I wasn't rude to them. ike: Are you sure? jhawk: No. ike: Seems like the default. You can put that in the minutes if you want. merolish: The fish is still broken. ike: I am periodically playing the role of office maid. jhawk: Has anyone sent mail to Nick? golem: No. rax: I don't see why we care about the fish so much, we should just clean the office. MIT Computing Report: rax: Don't SGIs get desupported tonight? golem: They're not desupported now? ike: The 4-035 cluster is closed and the SGIs are gone. Some guy called OLC and was told they lose.
