Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 7.14.03 The meeting was called to order at 7:33 by golem. In attendance were Voting members: rax golem jenselby merolish | keithw kenta Associate members: jhawk marc zacheiss deberg seph cfox zacheiss dbj ocschwar Prospectives: mwp | rradu Guests: Treasurer's Report: Chairman's Report: Office Report: cfox: Move to allocate $80 for a copy of "Mastering Matlab 6" [cfox: $80 for Mastering Matlab 6] golem: I was thinking of getting a poster to replace the other poster. The Bob the Angry Flower apostrophe poster. Move to allocate $20. marc: What the fuck are you talking about? jhawk: There is enough wall space for more than one poster. rax: We could discuss it offline. jhawk: I believe it is relevant. golem: angryflower.com <5-3-4, motion passes> [golem: $20 for poster] ocschwar: The APO folks found an old Frame handbook from O'Reilly while cleaning. People should look at it and determine whether or not it deserves shelf space. Office Cleaning Report: rax: The fact that this cup is still here, while much appreciated, is kind of sad. MIT Computing Report: cfox: The network group sucks. zacheiss: I should be doing the AFS quota increase this weekend. Default user quota will be going to 500 MB. kenta: Is there some Athena upgrade? zacheiss: 9.2 goes Solaris tonight and Linux tomorrow. Before term a patch with Mozilla 1.4 and Evolution 1.4 will come out. jhawk: The network group had scheduled outages of routers this week during peak usage times, and informed the routers of the these plans so that they could break moments before the planned upgrades. Go network group. marc: Fiscal Year 04 rates for everything went up. It will cost an extra couple bucks per phone, $4 per IP address, standard subnet fee is going up by 4-7000 dollars. Jack installs now cost $375 which is an increase of $175. golem: This is actually relevant since you should be aware that our budget is being decreased next year. jhawk: That is the same budget. golem: Apparently our decrease is a few percent. It is unknown how much. seph: Tibbetts mentioned a potential budget decrease. I assume that the funny money will do the right thing. golem: That is the question. The way that it works is not that they give us as much as it costs to run a network and then some. It is not going to increase to take into account this cost increase. This may be a more significant problem. marc: The treasurer should figure this out. Does the office budget include the machine room subnet? That is a monster increase. golem: We may be able to negotiate. zacheiss: Some of this is coming from everyone being upgraded from 10 shared to 100. marc: If the machine room subnet comes from the office budget we will be destroyed. golem: The treasurer is currently in Tahiti. We will have to wait for him. If it is not Boston it is Tahiti. Computer Services: jhawk: Charon lost its hard drive, and it suspended limekiller (the IPv6 server) whose console port is connected to charon. arolfe restored from backup. No interesting data was lost. golem: Modularity wins again. zacheiss: Jonathon hopes to upgrade to the new sun sometime this month. golem: We could have a wishful thinking report. SIPB Backup Report: zacheiss: They keep doing themselves and UFS is running off of the SDLT tape drive and all of the partitions fit on one tape again. jhawk: Move to merge the backup report with computer services. rax: I will change the minutes format. Publications Report: jenselby: iMatlab should arrive tomorrow or the next day. Orientation Report: rax: If you have thoughts about tours or midway see me. I will be sending mail soon. jenselby: We also need a HowToGAMIT blurb. golem: I was going to do that. We need to figure out exactly what we want to say. It is very whither and all that. Comments on that should go to me or sipb-ec. IAP Report: CokeComm Report: Other: marc: One of my hard drives at home followed Charon, but it was half of a mirror. golem: Modularity wins again. rax: I am going to be away Jul 28-Aug11. Someone else should take minutes. I will be in "Tahiti." Other Other: dbj: Boston Dynamics is looking for someone with a combination of real time embedded system and electronic design experience to work on a cool robotics project over the next year. If you know anyone with skills in this area, talk to me. ocschwar: My thesis works. That makes me enormously happy. deberg: I am probably running for City Council. seph: Matt is running against Aimee Smith. deberg: There are no districts. Sucks: seph: Network! The meeting was adjourned at 7:50. Minutes taken and submitted by rax.
