Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 7.21.03 The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by golem. In attendance were Voting members: rax kchen jtu golem arolfe keithw Associate members: jhawk hartmans ocschwar alex_c Prospectives: eirl | asanka Guests: Treasurer's Report: golem: He is back from Tahiti. Chairman's Report: Office Report: keithw: The wacom tablet does not seem to work on the Mac. If someone knows about these things and could get ti to work I would appreciate it. jhawk: I think it broke with OS X. keithw: It worked with OS X. golem: I think we were running OS X when we got it. jhawk: Plant wants to fix the air handler above a-w and I told them thery could come on THursday. I will move things for them. rax: That is a really shitty gong. keithw: Are more funds likely to be spent out of the gong allocation? ike: This one was $100. I might spend a few more on something to support it. alex_c: WHy bother, it's crap? jhawk: DOes it sounds better if you hit it hard? ike: You can play it if you want. It sounds worse if you hit it hard. rax: I have trash can lids that sound better than that. ocschwar: Move to allocate $10 for the purchase of a trash can lid. keithw: I would prefer we not spend the remaining money. ike: We might hang it up. jhawk: I think the gong is so bad it should be tossed. Since the perimeter fan units produce cold air, I have made it so that air can get out where the soda flats were. alex_c: Move to connect the SIPB gong to sipbmp3 so that hitting it makes an mp3 play. Office Cleaning Report: keithw: People should put mac peripherals in the amc peripheral drawer, otehrwise they get very tangled. hartmans: THere is a bunch of shit on the floor. Can this please go away? rax: It was supposed to be auctioned. golem: jhawk is being a twit. The issue is we haven't had jweiss here for like 4 months. hartmans: Move to dispose of those items in the most expedient manner possible. rax: Who implements this? alex_c: I think we need a 3-week discovery team to determine the most expedient way. jhawk: The keyboards are no longer on the floor in the way. it is unkind to our processes if we change our minds about this process. I suggest this be withdrawn. keithw: Is this consistent with our obligations toward keyboards we don't own ourselves. <6-2-4, passes> MIT Computing Report: keithw: MIT has delayed a plan to upgrade some dorm networks announced to start next summer, they will be delayed until next summer. It is not celar what the cause of the delay is or which dorms it will affect. Computer Services: arolfe: Last week lsc respected a spotlight for real genius and gave them a cool picture. Instead IS gave a three-day spotlight about weblogs. I think we should suggest that a different spotlight should go to on-campus IPs and off-campus IPs so the news office can continue to propagandize but people on campus can have something they care about. hartmans: Coolness. jhawk: I think that while the spotlight people have done a shoddy job including a second-tier no one knows about, I don't think encouraging them to have different pages is a good idea. PLenty of MIT community people view MIT pages from non-18 IP addresses. We should lobby them to display more spotlights on the front page. golem: I would agree with jhawk at least in principle because I find it irritating when a webpag7e serves different content depending on where you are. It is possibly more useful to have one of each that people could choose for themselves but I don't know how the politics worked. It would be essentially the old SIPB homepage. I think you should do whatever you damn please. Personally I have to sort of agree with jhawk. Publications Report: keithw: The next issue of the Tech will be Aug. 6th. golem: We still have to make an ad. rax: For what? golem: HtGAMIT. We need to tell zoz what to put in it. Orientation Report: IAP Report: CokeComm Report: golem: Since I have depleted the freezepops, I replenished it. Whatever, it is like $3. Other: keithw: MIT instituted a proceeding against the RIAA in Boston federal court. They want to quash a subpoena to identify who was using a particular IP address using KaZaa. The IP address was DHCP in TDC. arolfe: Do they actually log what mac address got what IP address? jhawk: I don't think anyone knows the answer, it is the fraternity's DHCP. keithw: MIT's current stance is "We would love to respond but the subpoena is invalid because it did not come from Boston, and you did not give us enought time to alert the student due to privacy laws." Presumably once the subpoena comes through properly they will say "We have no idea." Other Other: hartmans: Amazon has instituted a new teleportation service. Sadly, it does not work. It said it would be shipped today and arrive today. hartmans: People had an excellent opportunity to take down the internet due to a Cisco vulnerability but they didn't. arolfe: I dreamed Facilities painted the exterior of Building 7 lime green. Sucks: jtu: RPC vulnerability, jhawk: THe new gong. The meeting was adjourned at 7:49. Minutes taken and submitted by rax.
