Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2007-03-19 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tabbott. In attendance were Voting members: andersk aseering golem jhawk k_lai nelhage tabbott tilia wdaher Associate members: asedeno dkk mitchb ocschwar Prospectives: jwalden mathmike Guests: Officer Reports: '() MIT Computing Report: jhawk: I got some three-year-old messages and they were not the fault of the mail system. tabbott: So apparently the mail system doesn’t suck this time? SIPB Projects Report: mathmike: In an attempt to improve the uptime of SIPB’s most critical service, I installed a stapler on the wall outside the door with some tape. nelhage: It’s been up for approximately 24 hours. mathmike: course.mit.edu now allows you to save a link as the correct one, and then will go to that link fast. There are plans in the future to have a certificate-based system that allows people to add arbitrary links rather than ones that are found by the system. nelhage: We had a hackathon this weekend. Projects were hacked on. andersk did some magic that made Linerva-etch slightly closer to done. tabbott: He had this probabilistic build system that would build packages ¾ of the time, and eat disk space ¼ of the time. andersk: I fixed that bug. mathmike: I move to allocate $10 additional for the hackathon yesterday since we went over. wdaher: These german guys I was trying to buy that RFID reader from just stopped responding, but I’m looking at other ways to get one. dkk: Is that project “Barn FS” or “Bar NFS”? andersk: Both! mitchb: So what is that? nelhage: No comment. Office Report: wdaher: I found hunt on binkley. nelhage: hunt has also been installed on Linerva at /usr/games/hunt. And jhawk is scarily good at hunt. tabbott: There’s a bunch of junk on the table. tabbott: It would be good if we had more markers that we could put along the sill of the whiteboard. tabbott: There’s some food leftover from the hackathon. asedeno: I found the other DVI-to-2-VGA splitter thing, so we now have two dual-head office heads. nelhage: I think the office should have a copy of CLRS. We currently have a water-damaged copy of CLR. Move to allocate $100 for CLRS. wdaher: I talked to Leiserson about CLRS. He’s not interested in CLRSD. nelhage: I’m disappointed that CLRS does not include Boyer-Moore searching. tabbott: I believe jbarnold declared himself the office czar, and there have been some drawer reallocations. If you need a drawer, talk to jbarnold. tabbott: I see “extension cords” written on the board? Do we have extension cords? aseering: At the hackathon, some number of people decided that the proper way to discipline geofft was to thwhack him with the wrist rest. I move to reinstate the no-violence in the office policy. tabbott: As the person who will have to sign our anti-hazing policy in the Fall, I should point out that we need to have equal-opportunity thwacking. <3-3-7, motion fails> nelhage: The whiteboard got mounted. tabbott: It’s even mounted in read-write mode! I think we should commend k_land. Education Report: nelhage: We scheduled a CPW event during the hackathon. We declared it the “SIPB Inode and fsck Block Party”. Featuring such exciting events as “Name That Vulnerability!” and usability faceoff between OLPC and binkley. tabbott: Does binkley still turn on, by the way? nelhage: If anyone wants to play hunt on linerva, Team 1 has been officially designated the anti-jhawk team. nelhage: We looked at the HCS website after suggestions that we engage in some sort of activity with them, and they challenge us to Doom II. I think however that we should challenge them to a hunt tournament. Other: nelhage: We still haven’t used our last copy of “Using Discuss”. tabbott: I think I’m going to be missing the meeting next week as well due to visiting grad schools. Other Other: dkk: I’ve been a member for close to 20 years now, and this is the first time I’ve ever attended a meeting by accident. Discussion Report: (no minutes) The meeting was adjourned at 19:48. Minutes taken and submitted by andersk.
