Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2013-02-25


The meeting was called to order at 7:30:25 by bbaren.

In attendance were

Administrivia:
	achernya: I don't have the authority to start this meeting,
		and bbaren doesn't have the authority to run it.
	bbaren: We have a new clock. It's on the wall on the bulletin
		board. It's AC powered so we don't have to change
		batteries anymore.
	quentin: I see a slight problem. The lights reflect such that we can't
		see it from part of the office.
	achernya: Is it radio set?
	bbaren: No.
	dove: glasgall should be made office czar
	bbaren: Seconded.
	glasgall: NO.
	bbaren: Why don't we just not call him the office czar?
	glasgall: To that effect, the desk by the hallway is now clear.
	adehnert: The blankets have been washed.
	adehnert: I move to renew the book borrowing policy with no expiration
		date.
	achernya: Seconded
	quentin: Can we have some statistics about how often it's been used?
	adehnert: About a dozen times with no lost books.
	dove: Can you clarify?
	adehnert: A couple of years ago we passed a book borrowing policy with
		a signout requirement and a due date. The policy had
		an expiration date of originally six months, then we
		extended it. It's been going well, and I don't think
		we need an expiration date.

	cjtenney: There's no super glue in the office.
	bbaren: I'll get some with the next office supply order

SIPB Projects Report:
	codetaku: CPW events have been scheduled. We can change event details
		until March 8th. I will be sending emails and
		confirming with people in the near future.
	adehnert: zcomitt works again! If you want to get zephyrs when you
		commit things to a git repo, now you can!
	dove: afarrell and I are improving the SIPB IAP website. If you want to
		work on it in a primary capacity, talk to me. We'll
		have a hackathon at a later date
	afarrell: If you're interested in learning frontend stuff and web
		programming, this is a good way to do it.
	achernya: We have new SQL backup scripts. We now have working local
		backups. I tested them on my laptop and nothing broke
		horribly. AFS backups are still disabled until we
		figure out what we're doing with them.
	adehnert: We have trustworthy backups for the first time in as long as
		I've been a student!
	adehnert: If you're involved in running a project, fill out the form I
		sent out. If you didn't get it, your project is
		probably not on sipb-projects, and you should bug me
		to fix that.
	quentin: The office has four new speakers. They have 1/4 the physical
		volume and 2x the power. There have been mumblings
		about getting an amplifier.
	achernya: There have also been mumblings about getting a subwoofer.
	dove: We need an amp first.
	quentin: Not necessarily.

Other:
	achernya: glasgall and I noticed that there's a strange box labeled
		"ecommerce" sitting in the back of the office.
	glasgall: It contains a card reader and a modem along with other
		ecommerce paraphenalia.
	bbaren: During the last major cleanup two years ago, people found this
		box. They didn't know what to do with it, so they
		stuck it in the back to see if anyone would say
		anything about it. No one has said anything until now
	quentin: I include it on my office tour when I show prospectives
		around.
	bbaren: I would be in favor of keeping the modem, but less assertive
		about keeping the credit card imprinter. On the other
		hand, maybe CokeComm can start taking credit cards
	cjtenney: Can't we just use Stripe or Square?
	quentin: Nope, we can't.
	glasgall: Can we run CokeComm?
	quentin: That's less unambiguously disallowed.
	adehnert: When I spoke to SAO about this for another student group a
		number of years ago, they said we can't take credit
		cards with anything over ethernet. It must go over
		copper wires, because apparently unencrypted traffic
		over copper is safer than encrypted traffic over
		ethernet? Or at least that's what I got from SAO.
	dlaw: This is not consistent with what SAO has told other groups.
	achernya: CokeComm isn't here, so let's defer the discussion.
	quentin: The campus was closed for two hours Saturday morning becuase
		of a potentially fake rifle scare.
	afarrell: There were electronic communications received by police from
		an IP address in NY to the effect of, "Help, there's
		someone holding me hostage, they have a rifle and body
		armor."
	dove: It was that explicit?
	afarrell: According to who I talked to, yes. This caused SIPB to
		postpone our Railsbridge workshop until next Saturday.
	barren: If you're in 6.033, you have DP1 assigned now. There's a
		template on my homepage that you can use with LaTeX.
