Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2018-04-09 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by alvareza. In attendance were Student keyholders: cela, alvareza, mtheng, mcyoung, ikdc | bpchen, nchinda2 Associate keyholders: '() Members: sargentd, rsthomp, amigdal | npfoss, kevin21, elefthei, wmoses, joshuaa, wqian94 Guests: '() Administrivia: alvareza: We had an EC meeting last night, some of the things we talked about are, ways we can improve social integration at SIPB, as well as how to deal with the number of things such as... FSF. We talked about possible ideas that were passed to me by a number of people like a SIPB game night, and possibly SIPB office hours. I'll be sending out surveys in the coming week to gauge the interest in these propositions. We talked about decommissioning LAMP, we also talked about some of our previous projects. mcyoung: I'd like to nitpick here. LAMP was turned off... alvareza: For context there was a decommissioning party at Fall 2016... we're actually doing something with the CDs... we took no official action on the CDs, we just had a discussion on a number of topics, if you're a keyholder you can check in admin/minutes. mtheng: I propose we nominate elefthei for keyholdership. cela: Seconded. alvareza: ...see me after the meeting. Project Reports: wqian94: We successfully got Boba for Friday night. cela: I successfully migrated [the numbers] for Hyades... We are now completely clear to renumber hosts in SMR... Things work, so it's good! If you are running a SIPB service that needs to be renumbered, and you don't know how to do this, please talk to me and I'll help you make this happen. mcyoung: [explaining IS&T's motivation for renumbering] ...Tying a subnet to several buildings is annoying. elefthei: Those of you who will be here for CPW, especially the machine room tours... I'm sending an email tonight for a meeting... There will be some training going on, right? mcyoung: Sure... cela: Hyades continues! Our deadline for the end of April is something we're not going to meet, we're pushing it back... This will give us the time to do this well. One of the things we were thinking about is switching Hyades to training mode for a while... specifically bringing people [...] up to speed to what we are doing on Hyades. Other: wqian94: Google Code Jam was this weekend. If you didn't do it, it's too late. npfoss: Google Code Jam 2019 is closer than you think! mcyoung: A whole bunch of people have decided that they want to move to Discord instead of Zephyr, a lot of people have feelings about it, but we're building a bridge, it's the best bridge, it's so great that there are four divergent forks of it right now... We're gonna build a bridge, goddammit! A lot of the people who are involved with this are SIPB... cesium... dannybd... wqian94: I was looking at some of the [security?] of blockchain things... It's fucked up. Ethereum... I figured that this was a really bad [...] and has hitherto ceased to have any expectations for anything related to blockchain. Moral of the story is, everything sucks in ethereum. bpchen: You know how everyone is scrambling to Facebook alternatives... I stumbled on this thing called [...]... it's called the crypto social network! It sounds like your contribution to the community determines how many tokens you get... ikdc: I really like social networks where instead of friends I have people competing with me to make money. alvareza: That very well describes the MIT experience. mcyoung: Rust has a formal verification working group now. Which is very cool. I'm perfectly happy believing that all the unsafe code they are writing is sane. ikdc: I feel that they should have been doing this from the beginning. wqian94: There was a talk at Harvard today... the professor said, formal verification is great! Until you add something that isn't verified and break the system. amigdal: Everything that isn't verified, you just call it axiomatic and it's fine! ikdc: So basically don't run other people's crappy code. wqian94: We should set up a formal verification that's based on blockchain... Other Other: mcyoung: The Zuck visits Washington... the opening remarks for the hearing on Wednesday... He said something along the lines of, I'm very sorry that I built Facebook and for all the bad things that came out of it... He's really sorry. I think it's funny. cela: I labeled the switches in SMR, because there were no labels on them. mcyoung: I asked achernya which server is which, and he was like, the one in the center is the main one... cela: One of our UPSes does not have fans that work. We should fix this. I nominate Van to fix this. cela: ...The UPSes are over 20 years old. They are literally older than I am. The argument made by [...] was that if the UPSes start failing, everything else will follow. mcyoung: On the other hand, lead acid batteries means that they are not that voltatile... even though they have "lead" and "acid" in their names. mcyoung: I move that we abolish the project report section of the meeting, and just make project reports like allocations, that can happen anytime.
