Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2018-09-17 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by alvareza. [example] The time is probably like 5 to 8, we emailed SIPB at around Wednesday-ish... cela: I don't see why not help reserve rooms for this [...] alvareza: Okay, I'll make sure you have to power to reserve rooms... yczeng: I was thinking of sending out the email on Wednesday... alvareza: Make sure that next meeting, you tell people about how it went. I'd like to hear about its progress. emmabat: If there's nothing else I'd like to nominate npfoss for keyholdership, cos he's really active on some of our mailing lists, he's really great he helps out with lots of projects... alvareza: Also organizing SIPBW last year, also running the SIPB game night. Anyone seconds this? rsthomp: Seconded. npfoss: [accepts the nomination] alvareza: Okay come see me after the meeting to schedule your election. alvareza: You may notice the giant stack of boxes behind me. This is because the office czar has gone through the cabinets on this side, and moved a lot of the stuff that belonged to the associate keyholders of SIPB... if you're an associate keyholder of SIPB and would like your stuff inside these cabinets, email me or [...] and we'll help you ship it. We'll find a more permanent place to put these boxes, but now that the cabinets are clear, we can assign the cabinets to keyholders at least... the motivation for this is to make the office a place the more active keyholders can spend their time in, and also open the space back up to the students because we are the Student information processing board. Project Reports: cela: The Hyades project continues, we recently got 500 commits in the repository, if you don't know what Hyades is you should ask me after the meeting. rsthomp: I was planning to host a hackathon this Saturday for anyone who's hoping to come in and work on SIPB projects. alvareza: The SIPB library project... I met with two of our newest members to discuss the SIPB library project to try and understand what sort of technology, what sort of framework we should use for the project, the middle board right there has some representation of what the system should look like, there should be an email or mattermost sent out at some point with the design document... once we hammer out what we're trying to build and get approval from the rest of the board we'll [start working on the projects] alvareza: kaduk told me that there was an issue with the backups in AFS, after the sale of 18/8, SIPB AFS had to move all of its stuff, and during that renumbering process, the hostname rosebud2 was changed to rosebud because no one saw any reason why not. But that disrupted a cron job and created an issue with the backups, but that issue was found and fixed. Other: yak: Hi I'm madeline aka yak, I joined SIPB in 1987, I'm thinking of doing an IAP class and was wondering if SIPB was interested in sponsoring, numerical methods, things to do with [...] and adding numbers together to get other numbers and getting the wrong number and things like that, I'm hoping there's an IAP chair or something like that, once the IAP chair realizes they're the IAP chair, email me at yak@mit.edu. [...]: Are you on [...]? emmabat: It's the mailing list of all people whose kerberos contains an animal. Like I'm in there because I have a "bat". It's for bragging rights, you made the right decision to choose the correct kerberos... [...]: If you're in east campus you should check out Walker grocery, it's very cheap. npfoss: Does it fill the star-shaped hole in your heart? cela: [...] was mildly toxic, they actually adopted a code of conduct that isn't bullshit, I'm happy that no one had to tackle that person and convince them that they weren't an asshole... Other Other: rsthomp: I read an article today that had the tagline "Noah's ark but it's a but, a man saves 64 cats and dogs from hurricane [...]", and it had a picture of all the cats and dogs and it made me very happy. cela: [...] check my laptop to make sure it's not full of bugs? ikdc: There's a pretty neat theorem that says that you can. [extended discussion about how to fix a laptop correctly] rsthomp: This is why I only do my psets on difference engines. emmabat: I just want to say that after last week's meeting, I'm scared to make jokes about X is sooner than you think. npfoss: Relatedly, there's this cool animation made by the weather channel in unreal engine that shows how much water... emmabat: Less fun fact, their system of [...] hurricanes because it includes wind speeds, so hurricane florence technically wasn't a hurricane by the time it hit, it was just a bunch of flooding.
