Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2021-02-01


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by wmoses.

        quentin: IAP is sooner than you think.

	emmabat: Is it still technically IAP?

	wmoses: IAP is whenever you want IAP to be.

	mcyoung: It's snowing, that's got to count for something.

	emmabat: It snows during the start of spring semester too, so I don't know what you mean.

	mcyoung: It means whatever you want it to mean.

	jnwagner: We still need someone to man the midway, if anyone here is willing to commit to that that would be great.

	wmoses: So what you're saying is we can have fun in a room with techx and the bitcoin club?

	jnwagner: I'm not sure exactly how they're going to set us up.

        wmoses: Petey has emailed us about various adventures in the world of CPW - the CPW discord party, the CPW minecraft party, any new CPW parties. Join if interested.

	emmabat: You get to hang out with /the/ petey peterson.

	mcyoung: what I hear is that SIPB should have a, a, a, I was going to say something clever but then I forgot. An agglomeration of things we do for petey, but with a funny name. That's what SIPB is about, funny names for things.

	emmabat: Except our name, which is bad.

	wmoses: But the name is good because you can ask people what you can reacronym it to

	mcyoung: it's a great name for us because it's a bad choice people made in the 70s and now we're stuck with it, which is the epitome of computers

	quentin: After the meeting I'm going to try upgrading mattermost

	gshay: should have been in administrivia but I'd like to nominate huydai for keyholdership

        mcyoung: llvm shitposting time, guess what bug got fixed

	wmoses: Cel.

	cela: sudo vulnerability. If you have any version july 2011 through last week, any unprivileged user can escalate to root.

	quentin: With a single command you can run on the command line.

	mcyoung: sudo... apt.. upgrade...

	mcyoung: I ran it and I got a malloc error.

	quentin: You shouldn't be able to segfault sudo, either.

	cela: This is why I set my machine for sudo to always work, so this doesn't affect me since anyone can escalate to root (I'm using qubes)

	mcyoung: Billy, could you renew my ssh access to your machine?

	wmoses: no.

	mcyoung: I'm gonna go knock icecream-machine over.

	mcyoung: Billy guess what llvm bug got fixed. Yet another noalias bug got fixed, I'm excited to see how many days it takes to find a new miscompilation.

	emmabat: MIT is closed for snow. Don't go to campus, there's too much snow.

	wmoses: If there were classes right now, would they be closed? Since they're all virtual.

	emmabat: I think MIT closed a few days for snow during the semester, so this has been experimentally tested.

	quentin: Apparently sudo 1.9.5 which contained that fix had another vulnerability, so update again.

	mcyoung: debian doesn't seem to have that

	quentin: They might have fixed the vuln without changing the package version, debian loves doing that

	wmoses: I had a fun paper deadline this morning at forever am, I thought I had all my data but I was wrong and needed to collect more, so I made a program that shoves each different thing in a for loop to an aws lambda, quickly used many core years of compute to run all my machine learning stuff.

        emmabat: Speaking of research, I learned you can buy a 6 by 6 square of glass coated in conductor
