Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 24 March 1980 Meeting called to order at 1932 by William M. York. In attendance were DGH, WMY, DCP, RDM, CAH, ALAN, GMP, CRD, JSL, and ACW. WOS came in late. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted. Treasurer's report: The chairman, after some difficulty in locating the necessary data, reported that total spending to date this month is $5731, with Student a clear winner at $4002, SIPB_admin second at $920, followed by ECS at $607, and COOP at $130. SIPB brought up the rear with only $71. Trifectas paid $113, and the Daily Double went out at $72. We are still not spending enough money. Chairman's Report: The chairman did not succeed in arranging another meeting with Chris Wheeler. Penny reported that Wheeler had told her that he had slept through the last appointment and was sorry. Penny thought that Chris was not interested in helping fund the new terminal. Office Report: There is still an office. The carpet for the loft still has not been installed. Penny is not here to say "KTOC". Computer Services: The Student directory is 66 records long. There are hairy procedures for installing new users on Student, which have been mailed to SIPB at MC and sound difficult and kludgy to this uneducated observer. It ought to be fixed by Wednesday, but this is very tentative. If not, CAH will make things easier by hacking the required hair into new_user. The old system broke down when we reached 666 users. GMP reports that the hardware will be *shipped* May 9th, and should be received sometime after that. If we receive it earlier than the shipping date, something is wrong with the universe. Amber people are still keeping a lot of cruft in the attic in nbdd, and space is tight. There is a note from Ithiel Poole asking if we can sell him 300 records of nbdd. We will not sell it to him for the same old reasons. The datacomputer is gone. Telecommunications Report: The Random House terminal was finally called in, and the people at the house promised very nicely that the room would be clean before the repairman got there. We have still not been able to get a demo of the Magnavox. We want to find out more about the Retrographics device that Frankston told us about. We still do not know what kind of keyboard Kulp is willing to give us. Publications Report: We got more Emacs handouts. We seem to have a policy statement fault. JSL donated a lot of Emacs wall charts. Some other interesting Emacs cruft coult fit on the back. A random came in to get a soda at this point. Publicity Report: No real progress on the drop poster. We still have quite a few flyers to distribute. The HoToGAMIT blurb was mailed in. Perhaps maybe possibly we will be listed with the service organizations this year. ACW promises to dredge out his freshman letter from last year for the freshman mailing. Other: Hackers who sit for very long periods of time in front of video terminals should have their eyes checked frequently because these terminals often give off rays which sometimes cause cataract. Floating Agenda: A long time ago there was a lot of concern about center employeess making long local calls on center business from the SIPB phone. Probably it would be fair for the center to pay these phone bills, but since the center pays our telecommunications budget it might not be worth worrying about. People have been spotty about their office hours. When you pick up publications make sure that you mention that you are from MIT, so that you don't have to pay the tax that individuals have to pay. Regarding the SIPB's listing in the UROP guide we can safely leave the status quo the way it is. Naha is gone for the week so the terminals better not break. Applications: 70 for Guy Gladden to continue doing textpro. Given. 20 for Shigeyaki Hakusui to do calculations for track. Given. George Hart wants 40 more bucks to hack the cube. Given. $1300 autoed, $130 to meeting, $1430 total. Other Other: A bug was discovered in auto fill while typing in the auto money amounts. The chairman's terminal works. The Palter's terminal is. Colleen's is open. St. Naha's day was observed last Tuesday. HLSUA is next week. Bernie is in Poughkeepsie or Cleveland or something. HLSUA will be in Cincinnati. WOS entered sometime in all this. You can't bury people in New Orleans. Smee quit, leaving Charles Davis holding a bag full of Fortran. The entire language group was reorganized. Their heads are still spinning. The meeting was adjourned at 2032. The weary members sought the dropshafts and driftcabs. Gary Palter hailed a passing flitter with his electronic summoner. It dropped to pick him up. On the horizon the departing Mars shuttle lit the evening sky bright orange. Outside, somewhere, an alien was barking, sort of. Minutes taken by Allan C. Wechsler, acting Soley.
