Straight copy from 2001 directory. Leg Lab and City Scanning really don't exist. For 2002, Tom Dalton was the only one available for W91. zacheiss wasn't around for N42, so Laura Baldwin (boojum) did it and was great. (One thing to note about N42: there are many nooks and crannies and water fountains and closets. Have someone tail and make sure the number of frosh that walk into a closet is the same as the number that come out.) Max and Tyler were the two people who gave the Intelligent Room tour; everyone seemed to have a lot of fun there and would've enjoyed more time to stay and play. We lost about 10 frosh at the Media Lab when the tour guides wanted to run off for food and stories, and they wanted to stay behind and talk to the Wearables people. This probably was a good thing. Allocating more time for the AI and Media Labs might be good. --- Here are details on the stops for 2001. There are some details in the 2000 directory about previous years, but I've punted on the custom of reproducing the big list at the top of the old files because I know many of the people listed on there and they're pretty much all gone. I'd suggest in the future only putting in information that is known to be current. I think it would make things easier. --emarcus ------------ Stop: W91 Name: Happy fun server room Status: Confirmed Org/Dept/Grp: Ops Location: W91 Length: ~30 minutes, not including any of the walking Size: 30 is probably ideal. It gets hard to hear what's going on when you get much above that number. (I wouldn't actually recommend splitting a group and having half go to a different stop unless it was significantly more than 50 or so, but you should be aware that it does get hard to hear). If both of the people who have done it in the past are available next year, having two groups going through in different directions might help. Contact-name: Tom Dalton Contact-email: tdalton Contact-notes: David Lambert (lambert) is the usual contact for this stop, but he was on vacation this year. Tom seemed to enjoy doing it and did a pretty good job. He was a little bit inaudible at times. Next year it's probably best to email both of them. Having two tour guides would probably have improved things a lot, if only for audibility. Stop: N42 Name: Accounts & Helpdesk Status: Confirmed Org/Dept/Grp: Accounts/Helpdesk Location: N42 Length: ~20 minutes Size: pretty much indefinite Contact-name: Garry Zacheiss Contact-email: zacheiss Contact-notes: Garry is clueful so he will know what to do. This stop is also convenient because it's more or less between W91 and NE43/media lab. Stop: Wearables Group Name: Wearables Group Status: Confirmed Org/Dept/Grp: Media Lab Location: Media Lab Length: ~20 minutes Size: probably 20 max Contact-name: Richard Donovan Contact-email: rich@media.mit.edu Contact-notes: The best way to get ahold of these people if Rich doesn't reply is probably to email wearable-web@media.mit.edu. This is what actually got a response for me. Stop: Intelligent Room Name: Intelligent Room Status: Confirmed Org/Dept/Grp: AI Lab Location: NE43, 8th floor Length: They did a 20 minute presentation, but they have longer things they could do. They also have some neat videos of other demos they've done, which are reasonably interesting and can easily consume another 15-20 minutes. This stop also had the most questions asked by the students, so allowing a lot of extra time is probably good. They can also show the video to a second group while the first group is in the intelligent room. Size: 20 is possible but a touch crowded Contact-name: Andy Chang Contact-email: changa@mit.edu Contact-notes: The best way to get ahold of these people is probably to send mail to hes@ai.mit.edu which is Howard Shrobe (the head of the project and the official contact). They didn't respond to the first email, but someone replied to the second one. Stop: Stories and Food Name: Stories and Food Status: Confirmed Org/Dept/Grp: Location: Whatever room you reserve (1-135 in this case) Length: Indefinite (people hung out until after midnight this year) Size: depends on the room you reserve Contact-name: Jeff Schiller (guest speaker) Contact-email: jis Contact-notes: Stop: Leg Lab Name: Leg Lab Status: Asked Org/Dept/Grp: AI Lab Location: NE43 basement Length: -- Size: -- Contact-name: Contact-email: Contact-notes: The leg lab is now defunct and pretty much everyone who has done tours stuff in the past is gone. Stop: City Scanning Project Name: Template Status: Asked Org/Dept/Grp: LCS Location: NE43, 2nd floor Length: -- Size: -- Contact-name: Mike Bosse Contact-email: ifni Contact-notes: He is still a part of the project, but doesn't have time to do it this year.
