Course Description: 

Elementary programming concepts, including variable types, data structures, operations, flow control, and functions; MATLAB® environment, syntax, (sparse) matrix operations, and numerical computation built-in functions. Introductory linear algebra, and probability and statistical estimation. Formulation of engineering problems in forms suitable for efficient numerical computation. Numerical methods relevant to engineering, including approximation (interpolation, least squares, statistical regression), numerical integration and differentiation, solution of linear and nonlinear algebraic systems of equations and eigenproblems, discretization of ordinary differential equations. Deterministic and Monte Carlo approaches.

Errata: page 415 of the textbook

On page 415 of the textbook, the line

"u[for f = (0 0 ... 0)^T] = p^n \leftarrow nonzero in all entries!"

should read

"u[for f = (0 0 ... 1)^T] = p^n \leftarrow nonzero in all entries!";

in other words, to generate p^n, we consider an f which is zero in all entries EXCEPT entry n, which we must set to 1.

2.086 Mini Quiz 7

Hi!

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving break!

Mini Quiz 7 week begins tomorrow, Monday 1 December, and I've heard from a few of you today asking me to confirm the topic.  The focus of Mini Quiz 7 will be "Linear Systems of Equations... in a Nutshell" (Unit V).  Recall that Professor Patera will have office hours this week everyday from 9:00--11:00 AM, so if you have questions or need some help...

As for the other mini quizzes, you may refer to the textbook, lecture notes, Matlab tutorials, and other class materials as well as your own notes and scripts; you are allowed to use a calculator for arithmetic operations and simple function evaluations; however, you will not be permitted to use computers, tablets, or smartphones.

Errata: Nutshell: Linear Systems of Equations

In the nutshell on Linear Systems of Equations, in CYAWTP 6, please change the (2,2) entry (the entry in the second row, second column) of the matrix A to MINUS 1/4 (rather than PLUS 1/4).  The problem is more interesting with the minus sign.
