Instructors: J. Christopher Love, Hadley Sikes

TAs: Jonathan Ju-En Chou, Nian Liu, Robert Shaw

Lecture:  TR2.30-4  (66-110)
Recitation 1:  W10  (66-144)
Recitation 2:  W11  (66-144)
Recitation 3:  W12  (66-168)

Information:

The goal of 10.213 is to develop your understanding of thermodynamic principles and their use in solving engineering problems involving single and multicomponent and single and multiphase chemical and biological systems. The subject incorporates applications of the first and second laws of thermodynamics to open and closed systems, with an emphasis on open systems. You will learn methods for calculating the thermodynamic properties of mixtures, including colligative properties, and phase equilibria, with an emphasis on multicomponent vapor-liquid systems. Power cycles, refrigeration cycles, and separation systems are analyzed as examples to illustrate the practical utility of key concepts.

Final exam

Hi everyone,

We would like to give all of you a pat on the back for making it through this difficult semester! We know that you have been through a lot and given a lot of material throughout the past several months. Hopefully you've managed to learn the essentials of thermodynamics and now feel more like a chemical engineer. Now it's time to combine everything you know and face the final head-on. To help you prepare for the cumulative exam, we have pieced together a set of review problems that covers nearly all topics we discussed in this class. It is uploaded onto Stellar, called "Final review problems" under the Final section. Please take a look at it at your leisure just to get a feel of the problems (or work through it in advance if you like). The TAs will go over the solutions in detail during our review session on Saturday (5/20) 2:30-5:30pm in 4-231. Robbie will also lead an optional Aspen tutorial session right after (get those extra credits!).

I have also updated the review notes for the final part of our class on reaction thermodynamics. You should now be able to find a complete set of review notes for all topics covered throughout the semester. They can be found on Stellar under each quiz section (2 documents per quiz).

All homework solutions and recitation materials should be on Stellar now. You can also find additional practice problems on Stellar from Prof. Sikes to help you understand the material better. For any last minute questions, the TAs will be holding an extra office hour session from 1-3 pm on Sunday (5/21) (room TBD).

Finally, just as a reminder, the final will be held on Monday, May 22nd in Walker Memorial (50-340) from 9:00 am-12:00 pm. You are allowed to bring 4 sheets  of notes (both front and back), your textbook, and the additional reading posted on Stellar for distillation. Please also bring a calculator. We will provide you with paper to write on. Once again as Prof. Sikes mentioned in class, the final exam will be cumulative but it will be designed to be the length of a regular exam so you will have plenty of time to work it through!

As always, the TAs are here to help if you have any questions or concerns.  Feel free to email us, post on Piazza, and/or schedule individual meetings with us.

See you all on Saturday!

Quiz 3

Hi everyone,

We are about to have our last quiz of the semester! Quiz 3 will be held on Tuesday, May 2nd in Walker Memorial (50-340) during our regular class time 2:30-4:00 pm. You are allowed to bring 3 sheets  of notes (both front and back) and your textbook. Please also bring a calculator. We will provide you with paper to write on.

The Stellar website should now be up-to-date with the materials you will need for this quiz (lecture slides, Socrative questions, homework solutions, extra practice problems, and recitation notes).

The review notes for this section of the class are now complete and updated to incorporate relevant material from Ch8.1 (located in Quiz 3 section on Stellar).

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to email us, post on Piazza, and/or ask us directly during our Monday office hours. We'd be open to set up individual meetings as well if you feel the need.

Anyways, good luck studying (and don't forget we have a review session on Sunday)!

Materials for Quiz 3

Hello everyone,

Quiz 3 is rapidly coming up and to help you prepare for it, the teaching team has uploaded various resources onto Stellar. As mentioned in lecture today, Prof. Sikes released a number of problems from the textbook with detailed solutions. Take a look at these examples to familiarize yourself with applying what you have learned in the past several lectures. We have also uploaded Quiz 3 from Spring 2015 as a practice exam (solutions provided). Finally, we have prepared some review notes similar to what you have seen for Quiz 2. Hopefully these materials will help you in preparing for the upcoming exam in addition to the lecture notes and the textbook. As always, we welcome you to come to office hours to clarify any confusions or post questions on Piazza (and don't forget to vote for the review session time if you haven't done so yet)!

P.S. Please note that tomorrow office hours will be in 2-132 during our regular time (3-4:30 pm). This will be our last room change and all office hours afterwards will be in 66-144.

Quiz 2

Hi everyone,

Quiz 2 is right around the corner and we hope you all feel somewhat prepared for it. As a reminder, it will be held on Tuesday, April 4th during our regular class time (2:30-4:00 pm) in Walker Memorial (50-340). You are allowed to bring 2 sheets of notes (both front and back) and your textbook. Also bring a calculator and a printout of  relevant appendices (A and C being the most important) if you don't have a physical copy. The TAs will also bring in their own textbooks in case someone needs it during the exam. As with Quiz 1, we will provide you with paper to write on.

All recitation material, quiz review sheets and problems, and homework solutions related to this quiz should be on Stellar now. For those that couldn't make it to the review session today, Robbie also prepared solutions to several conceptual problems from the textbook, which you can find on Stellar as well (these were covered during the review session).

Finally, we just learned today that there will be a 7.05 review session from 7-9 pm tomorrow which conflicts with our regular office hours. We decided to split up the work a bit and two of us will be holding an extra office hours from 4:00-5:30 pm tomorrow and one of us will remain during the regular time. In this case you guys won't have to feel torn for having to miss our office hours by going to the 7.05 review session. Since it's a bit late to book a room, we'll just have to scavenge any unused classroom in building 66 so walk down the hallway and look for us tomorrow if you decide to come at 4 pm. We'll keep an eye on Piazza as well just in case you can't make either.

Good luck studying!

Quiz 2 review uploaded

Hey everyone,

I hope today's conceptual review helped you all in clarifying some of the material we've learned during the past several lectures. Since we didn't have time to go through the second half of chapter 5 today (departure functions, JT expansion), I've uploaded my notes to Stellar. You can find the notes for both chapter 4 and chapter 5 under "Quiz 2". Feel free to use this as a guide as you prepare for the quiz (possibly during spring break xD). To help you guys further prepare for the exam, we will holding another review session where we will work out example problems related to EoS and Thermodynamic web on Sunday, 4/2. Please go to our Piazza webpage and vote for the preferred time (otherwise we may just pick some random time......12 a.m. for instance)! As always, don't hesitate to ask us any questions you may have either through email or Piazza and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Have a great spring break!
