16.842  Fundamentals of Systems Engr

Clarification: Grades for 16.S898 - extra 6 units

One quick clarification: Those of you who enrolled for 6 extra units of the special subjects class 16.S898 (a little more than half the class) to reflect the extra workload associated with the MBARC design-build project can extract that your 16.S898 grade will be identical to your 16.842 grade.

However, this 2nd grade will take longer to get posted (probably early January) since the special subjects grades are submitted indirectly via the department and not directly to the Online Grade Submission (OGS) system.

Grades for 16.842 Submitted to Registrar ! HAPPY HOLIDAYS

The grades for 16.842 Fundamentals of Systems Engineering have been submitted to the registrar's office and should appear on WEBSIS shortly. Overall everyone did extremely well despite the high workload.

We are also very grateful for your feedback on how to improve the class.

Team 2 - augmented by some other students - is preparing to represent MIT at the MBARC competition at Camp Pendleton, CA on January 18-19, 2013.

16.842 Final Exam posted !

The final exam for 16.842 Fundamentals of Systems Engineering has been posted. The "exam" is in the format of a self-reflection exercise and peer review. Please upload your answers to the following link:

Results from MIT internal MBARC Competition

Results from MIT internal MBARC Competition

We held the final event for 16.842 yesterday afternoon from 1-5PM at Constitution Beach in East Boston. All 4 teams showed up with their vehicles and support equipment, ready to compete. The conditions were quite good considering December in Boston with a temperature in the mid-40s initially, low cloud cover and light winds of about 5 mph blowing onshore as well as an incoming tide. Conditions deteriorated over the course of the afternoon.

None of the teams were able to complete all 4 missions.

Most teams were able to record at least one trial for missions 1 and 2. Two teams attempted mission 3, the combined land/water course but were not able to complete it. By rules all teams who do not complete mission 3 get a max score of 1,800 seconds. In order to reflect the fact that teams 2 and 4 attempted the combined amphibious course we gave them a partial credit of 100 meters towards mission 4.

After recording your mission times and applying the scoring formula, including taking into account your prior performance prediction we are declaring TEAM 2 ("Instant Justice") the winner. It was a close call with TEAM 4 in second place.

TEAM 2 WILL REPRESENT MIT AT THE NATIONAL MBARC COMPETITION AT CAMP PENDLETON, CA ON JANUARY 18-20, 2013.

We are glad that there were no major incidents or accidents and everybody returned safely. This was a big learning experience for everybody including the faculty and staff. There will be a separate message sent out with a link to the final exam for 16.842.
