8.05  Quantum Physics II

Final Exam Grades

Dear Class:

The final exams have been graded and the results posted. It was a test with some challenging parts and we were happy with the results. The average was about 66 with a standard deviation of 16. We will publish the test and the solutions once the dust settles -- namely, once we know there are no students taking the final late.

The final course grades have also been decided. If you are in a rush to know what your grade is, write to Prof. Adams, Thaler, or me, and we will let you know. Looking at your test is possible, if you think it would be useful to your learning. For this you have to ask your recitation instructor for an appointment to go look at it with him. Profs. Adams and Thaler will try to accommodate you in the following days or later during the break.

I enjoyed lecturing 8.05, your questions, your enthusiasm, and, last but not least, getting to know many of you. It was an intense course and I hope you feel you have learned and developed a more sophisticated understanding of quantum mechanics. Profs. Adams, Thaler and myself want to wish you all happy holidays and a restful and enjoyable winter break.

final exam today

Dear Class:

Our final exam is today beginning at 1:30 pm and ending at 4:30 pm in du Pont. Your test will come with the formula sheet, stapled separately for convenience. The front cover of the test includes advice on time management.

ramdom stuff --

Dear Class:

Enjoy your review, starting in a few minutes.

The solution of problem 5 in the 2011 final exam had a page out of order and caused some confusion to a number of students. I reposted it with the right order.

The formula sheet had a small typo (an x_0 that should have had a tilde to denote a coherent state-- noted by Anna Ho). This has also been fixed. Studying the formula sheet is a good way to review the material.

Review session Sunday 5-7, at 32-155 / other stuff

Dear Class:

The review session by Allan Adams is tomorrow sunday, 5-7 pm in room 32-155.

Remember, the posted finals include problems on factorization that we have not covered this semester nor we will test you on them! On the 2010 final this is problem 7. On the 2011 final, this is problem 6 and question 5 in problem 1.

As I mentioned last time, a good study plan includes

Go the the review session.
Study the old final exams.
Study the practice problems.
Review the last few homework solutions,
Read the (after midterm) class notes I typeset (and your class notes).
Review your midterm exam not to make similar mistakes.
Read some of the selected sections above.

Office Hours Modification

Dear 8.05,

Slight change of the office hours:
Thursday, Dec. 13, 10 am -12 noon, Jesse Thaler
Friday, Dec. 14, 10 am - 12 noon, Allan Adams

I'll also hold my usual office hours tomorrow evening from 7.30-8.30.
