HW4

Dear All,

HW4 (the last homework) is uploaded. Just like HW3, this will be a bit more challenging and time-consuming. I tried to make it as easy as possible by making one part optional. But do let me know if you need any help. You are certainly welcome to use 1 HW extension policy for your flexibility. I know that some of you already are using this.

On top of this, I can make HW4 due one week later (by Columbus day) if you like (but no further extension is possible) so that I can allow ample time for you to do. This homework is actually I meaningful and useful, so I want you to take sufficient time.

So, in short,

HW3 is due last Tuesday (1 week extended to Oct 2nd if you are taking advantage of the policy)

HW4 is due Oct 9th (but no more extension is possible, since it will spill into finals week)

HW3 and onward

Dear All,

HW3 is already online, which is due on next Tuesday. There will be another homework (HW4), and then Columbus day holiday, followed by final project week. The half semester is already waning.

As you can see in HW3 and HW4, the problems are a bit more challenging (both numerically and scientifically), requires a bit more effort from your part. I will not guide you step-by-step as in HW1 using uploaded videos, although there will be some video files teaching you 'how to' on some crucial skills.

From now on, I would like to recommend, therefore, to try to attend lectures (3 more lectures left) to learn some of the practical skills dealing with mesh etc. Yesterday's lecture (Lecture 3, video available) dealt with specific topic of mesh size and ways to optimize mesh selection, which is perhaps the essence of the knowhow regarding numerical simulation. I believe that watching those would be very helpful to deal with real-world problems coming to you later in the course.

HW2 is on

Dear students,

I see that many of you did the HW1 with little difficulties, but do let me know if you have any comments (e.g. took too much time, etc.).

I already uploaded HW2, along with 4 videos in order to help you go through the questions. Just like HW1, the videos should be quite comprehensive and helpful. You don't really need to wait for Lec 2 to get started, so please go ahead and get started on HW2 by watching videos.

I am looking forward to "seeing" many of you on Thursday evening. Kyungyong will send you reminders.

First Lecture video is online

Dear students,

Yesterday we had the first lecture this term at 9pm on webex. If you missed it, you can watch it online (link is on the STELLAR site).

Yesterday's lecture was mostly introduction and logistics, but the most important thing to do NOW is to get the HW1 done, which is due next Tuesday morning 9am. As I said during the lecture, this is quite doable even though timing seems a bit short, since I already uploaded 3 videos essentially going through all the steps necessary. Kyungyong (TA) will be available to answer any questions, and will hold office hours on Monday. But, from my experience I know students can handle this homework as long as they spend sufficient time.

Welcome to 20.334! TONIGHT 9pm (Sep 6) we will have our first webex lecture.

Dear students,

Welcome to 20.334!

As explained in the subject information handout (available on the STELLAR), this year the format will be different due to my sabbatical this fall. Instead of in-class lecture on Friday 2-3pm, we will be having an online lecture (webex enabled) every Thursday 9pm. All you need is a computer with decent microphone / speaker and internet connection. The link to my webex room is on the sidebar of the STELLAR site.

The first 'lecture' will be TONIGHT (Thursday, Sep 6th), 9pm. Please connect to the webex a bit early to address any connection issues. I will also record the whole lecture and make it available, so don't worry if your schedule has a conflict for tonight's lecture.
