24.231 Ethics
Fall 2018
Instructor: Tamar Schapiro
Lecture: TR11 (4-163)
Information:
This course is a survey of moral philosophy in the Western tradition. What makes right actions right and wrong actions wrong? What does a good life consist in? What does it take to be a virtuous person? What does it mean to be free and responsible for what you do? And why should we care about these ideas? Our aim is to understand how some of the most influential philosophers have addressed these questions, and by so doing, to formulate our own views. Readings from classic and contemporary authors, including Aristotle, Bentham, Kant, Rawls, Nozick, Nagel, and Korsgaard.
