Tue 10/16/2018 12:30p-2p Talk: What in the heck does a CIO of a (developing) country do?

What: 1 hour talk with 30-minute Q&A. Light lunch will be served.
Dr Moinina David Sengeh (MIT PhD, Media Arts and Sciences program @ the Media Lab) will briefly discuss his role and vision for action as the Chief Innovation Officer. David serves as Adviser to the Chief Minister and President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Professor David J. Francis. He heads the newly formed Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) in the Office of the President. DSTI's vision is to make Sierra Leone into an entrepreneurship and innovation hub for seeding, translating and scaling solutions.

use IdeaPitch PPT template for your one-slide IdeaPitch(es) or come
up with your own format for conveying the essence of your idea(s).
Please just one slide per idea area, but feel free to include
images or graphs or links or other font or color schemes,
etc. You are encouraged to collaborate with classmates on
IdeaPitches or prepare them alone. Everyone should be part of
at least one IdeaPitch but can submit more than one! Past
years IdeaPitches are online under Materials as is the
template. We will be presenting each of these live in class
in upcoming week(s) and sharing them between classmates!

Assignment #2 ~ Solution Exploration / Idea Scouting ~ DUE Wed midnight 9/19
Pick three enabling technologies (use this Survey form three
times, once for each idea) and speculate about what problems they
might solve. Or vice-versa, pick a global problem, for example,
from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) & consider
potential solutions. In any case, speculate briefly about what sort
of venture might successfully deploy this solution or idea at
scale.

Assignment #1 ~ Scalability Survey ~ DUE Wed midnight 9/12
Pick a compelling beneficial organizational venture scaling
story -- could be an emerging market unicorn, an MNC, an MIT or
Harvard startup, something historic or contemporary, a success or
failure, any locale, any industry of note. Tell the essential
narrative of what allowed it to grow dramatically, solve problems,
serve customers -- all these core features and key lesson(s) in one
written paragraph. We understand this will necessarily be
only a brief and incomplete written summary but we want to you
spend your time mostly reading widely and thinking deeply about
your case example and learning lessons from how they scaled.
