Final Exam problem 3

Problem 3 in the final exam was indeed misstated. Instead of binary phase grating with spatially incoherent illumination, it should have been either (1) binary amplitude grating with spatially incoherent illumination or (2) binary phase grating with spatially coherent illumination. In the latter case, I should have given you the ATF instead of the OTF.

I wrote this problem and sincerely apologize for the confusion that it undoubtedly caused.

If in your answer you stated something along the above lines, e.g. "there is no contrast in the input or output but if the illumination were spatially coherent and we were given the ATF there would be contrast and I would be able to compute it," then you will receive full credit. You will also receive full credit if you solved the problem assuming spatially coherent illumination and took the plot to indicate ATF instead of OTF, as Justin suggested.

Again, I apologize for this error. Hope everyone have a nice summer.

Final Exam Tomorrow @ 9AM in 56-154

A couple announcenments:
(1) Our final exam is tomorrow morning @ 9am in room 56-154. It will be 3 hours long. (4 questions, different exams for 2.71 and 2.710)

(2) It was requested just now during Office Hours that y'all get an extra practice problem for qhat a Hamiltonian-type question might look like. I have posted a Hamiltonian Question from a previous exam on the "Practice Problems" section of the the stellar site.

(3) I've created a poll for hologram making this Friday/Saturday. 3 people per section. It probably won't take all 2 hours.

Notes from last lecture, Final Exam Review Session, Fun with holograms!

A few notes:
(1) Solutions to HW #8 have now been posted

(2) The lectures notes for the last lecture have been posted under the Lecture Notes section of the stellar site as: "2011 Last week of class lecture notes"

(3) I will hold office hours for the final exam next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 4-6pm. If you would like extra help and those hours don't work for you, email me and I can schedule a time to meet up any time on Tuesday or Wednesday (my flight back to Boston doesn't get back in until Monday evening).

(4) Finally, if y'all have the time on Friday, May 20 during the evening or Saturday, May 21 during the day (after your exams), I would like to offer students in the class a chance to record holograms. Drop me a line with your availability during those times if you're interested. The recording process should take no longer than an hour. (I will pre-mix developer and set up a recording stage.)

Good Luck on Finals!
