Subject Description:
Introduction to organic chemistry. Basic principles of structure, bonding, and the reactivity of organic molecules. Introduction to organic synthesis. Focus on the chemistry of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds, and the chemistry of the carbonyl group.

Final Grades for 5.12
The final exams are now graded and will be available for you to look at in the Chemistry Education Office beginning tomorrow (Friday May 20). Final course grades are recorded on the inside cover page of the exams. Please note that MIT policy prohibits us from reporting grades to students via email, so unfortunately your TA cannot let you know your grade by email.

Final Exam
The full version of the solutions to the final exam study guide problems is now posted on the Exams page of the 5.12 website. This version includes the solutions to the problems discussed in Saturday's review session in addition to the previously posted solutions to the final exams from 2008, 2009, and 2010. Please note a typo in the solution to problem 3 in the 2008 exam: the stereochemistry of "Product 2" is shown incorrectly; for the correct structure interchange the Br and Me groups.
The seating chart for the final exam is posted on the Exams Page of the 5.12 website. The exam is 1:30-4:30 PM on Tuesday in Johnson Ice Rink. Please arrive early if possible. Remember that you must sit in your designated section (based on your officially assigned recitation section). See the Final Exam Information and Study Guide handout for more details (available on the Exams page of the website).
Reminder: A "Last Minute Help Center and Hotline" staffed by 5.12 TAs will be available Monday night! Visit Room 4-270 or call 617 252 1413 with your questions between 7:30 and 11:30 PM.
If you have not already done so, please visit the website http://web.mit.edu/subjectevaluation to submit your evaluation of the class. Today is the last day to submit course evaluations!

Poetry Competition Results Posted
The winning entries in this year's competition "Poetry in Organic Chemistry" are now posted on the Document Index page of the 5.12 website. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all the many students who contributed entries. There were a number of brilliant compositions in addition to the few we were able to celebrate in class today.
Reminder: please don't forget to complete a subject evaluation via the website http://web.mit.edu/subjectevaluation. The deadline is Monday and most of the class has not provided evaluations yet. We read all comments carefully and are eager to get your feedback and sugggestions how to improve the class for next year.

Solutions to Study Guide Problems
The solutions to the past final exams in the Study Guide are now posted on the Exams page of the 5.12 website. An expanded version that includes the solutions to the review problems for the May 14 Review Session will be posted on Saturday afternoon.
To gain maximum benefit from these problems, we urge you to work the problems from the past year's finals only after you have reviewed your notes, problem sets, and hour exams.
