Subject Description: 

Equilibrium properties of macroscopic systems. Basic thermodynamics: state of a system, state variables. Work, heat, first law of thermodynamics, thermochemistry. Second and third law of thermodynamics: entropy and free energy, including the molecular basis for these thermodynamic functions. Phase equilibrium and properties of solutions. Chemical equilibrium of reactions in gas and solution phases. Rates of chemical reactions. Special attention to thermodynamics related to global energy issues.

Contrary to what I have told many of you, a solution set to the practice final has been generated by Professor Silbey. It is now posted on Stellar. If you have further questions about the practice final solutions, or about any of our exams earlier this semester, please talk to your TA.

Final Exam

As mentioned in an earlier post, the final exam is on Monday, 12/13, from 9AM-12 Noon and will be held in the du Pont building.

The procedure will be the same as usual, you will be allowed a calculator, writing utensils, and now three sheets of paper with whatever you would like written on them (8.5x11" sheets please). You will have 3 hours to complete the exam. The exam is worth roughly 1/3rd of your grade.

TAs will schedule review sessions prior to the exam, these will be posted on Stellar when their times and locations are available.

A practice exam will be posted online.
