Final Project Grading

Dear Students,

I have gotten some great email from those who attended the presentations yesterday. People were inspired and moved by the presentations. I have completed grading most of your final presentations. Most of you did a great job in conveying metaphor, storytelling, complexity and data in your systems visualization. A number of them are professional enough to go to publication --- and if any of you are interested, follow up with me.

A few of you had great project ideas, started of really well in the term, but the end project was not the quality that I had hoped for. On the other hand, there were a few of you who I was concerned about, and hit the ball out of the park with great work.

My belief is that those of you who did well, did so because you put in the effort and cared to deliver your message. As MIT and Harvard students, clearly you have the intelligence and acumen to succeed at anything you put your heart and mind on. Along this thinking, to those of you who could have done better, I will send the few of you notes, and will offer you until Wednesday to resubmit your final projects --- if you wish to take advantage of that do so.

It was a pleasure teaching this course. Your presentations and the videos will go live on sysviz.mit.edu soon, I'll keep you posted. The final awards will also be posted. In addition, I am planning on an event at my home for those of you who wish to attend and will send out the notice soon also.

December 8 11AM to 5PM Meeting Times

Dear Students,

If any of you want to do a dress rehearsal or get more feedback on
you projects, I've setup some time slots between 11AM to 5PM
this Thursday. It will be first come, first serve. I will be in
E15-320 during those hours to provide final feedback. I wish you
all the best!

NOTE: If you wish you can SKYPE in at that time. My SKYPE ID is vashiva.

December 9, 2011 Class - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

We will host our final December 9, 2011 meeting in E14-633, which is in the New Media Lab Building. The room is a lovely room with a large screen. As announced earlier, this will be your opportunity to present your FINAL presentation.

Each of you will only have five (5) minutes. To help you organize yourself, here is the Presentation Format:

1. Begin by introducing yourself, Name, which department you belong to and your year. e.g. "Hi, my name is John Doe, I'm in Brain Cognitive Sciences and am a Senior"

2. Introduce the system you are exploring, the purpose, and provide example sub-system elements. E.g. I am exploring the college educational system relative to reputation, my purpose in exploring this is to understand if going to a good school increases my chances of success, some of the sub-systems are: application processing, marketing systems, Standardized testing.

3. Present you systems visualization on the screen.

4. For visualizations which are animations with a narrative audio clip, then simply, just let it play. For those that are graphics, you can provide the "story", meaning be the story teller in front of the class.

5. At the end, describe the Visual Metaphor you used, and how you chose to represent the Data in the Visualization.

6. Conclude with any final remarks.

Please upload any materials you will need to be presented by 9AM on Friday, so it is loaded on this site,since as you get up in front of the class, we can queue it up on the screen.

December 2nd Class - Working Session & December 9th Final Project

On December 2, 2011, our class this Friday, will be a working session. My colleague will be facilitating the class. The purpose of this class is to give you the opportunity to share your work in progress with your other classmates and get their input and feedback on how to improve your project. I highly recommend you take advantage of it. I've given you my feedback, but getting others feedback will be valuable to improve your project.

On December 9th, 2011, we have rented a much larger room in the Media Lab for each person to present their final project. There will be an outside faculty/advisory team of 4 people including Department Heads, who will review each project along the following criteria which we have talked about in class:
Visual Metaphor
The Story
System Complexity
Data Representation

I will use this to grade your final project. However, from a final presentation perspective, they will use it to judge the project to present final awards at the end of December 9th, for the Best Visual, Best Story, Best System, Best Data Representation, and Best Overall.

We will have refreshments brought in.
