TAs: Christopher Werley, Johanna W Wolfson, Mikhail Wolfson

Lecture:  MWF10  (4-370)

Subject Description:

Equilibrium properties of macroscopic systems. Basic thermodynamics: state of a system, state variables. Work, heat, first law of thermodynamics, thermochemistry. Second and third law of thermodynamics: entropy. Gibbs function, phase equilibrium properties of solutions. Chemical equilibrium of reactions in gas and solution phase. Rates of chemical reactions. Review Session, Office Hours, Posted Materials

A review session will be held Fri. 5/18 from 2pm - 5pm in 2-105. The review session will focus on solving exam-type problems, and the format will be as follows:

2pm-3pm: Kinetics (Johanna)
3pm-4pm: Lectures 1-14 (Misha)
4pm-5pm: Lectures 15-28 (Kit)

Office hours will be held as follows:

Kit: Sat. 5/19, 2pm - 4pm, 2-072
Johanna: Sun. 5/20 11am - 1pm, 4-261
Misha: Sun. 5/20, 1pm - 3pm, 4-261

A practice final exam has been posted. The material comes from two different final exams, so it may not exactly reflect the length of the final you will take. Also note that the posted exam has less emphasis on kinetics than the final you will take.

A few more kinetics practice problems and their solutions have been posted. These (in addition to the practice final) can be found under the heading "Exam Preparation."

Solutions to all of problem set 9 will be posted later today. Check the Stellar site later this week for solutions to problem set 10 and more practice problems for Exam I - Exam III material.

Exam III info sheet and practice problems

An information sheet stating which equations you should know for the third exam has been posted. It can be found under "Exam Preparation."

Practice problems have also been posted. The posted material is /not an actual exam/, but consists of 3 exam-style problems with representative material for the exam.

Problem Set 8, #5

Please note that kT is much larger than the vibrational energy spacing, but is not larger than the ground state electronic energies of the two phases.

This means that you can only take the high temperature limit of the vibrational contribution to Qalpha and Qbeta. You cannot apply it to the parts involving the ground state energies.

Review Session and Office Hours for Exam 3

There will be a review session to cover Exam 3 material on Mon. April 30 from 7-9 pm in 4-261.

TAs will have office hours on Tues. May 1 from 7-10 pm in 4-159.
