Membrane fabric samples

Hi Team,

Samar asked me to remind y'all, since there are many people doing membrane structures for their rooves, that you should come check out my fabrics! I have a number of membrane samples under my desk, for all to peruse and enjoy.

Preliminary calculations

All,

Here is a clarification for Thursday's preliminary calculations.  We are looking for you to begin to size the elements for your roof.  For instance, the depth of trusses, cross-sectional area of members, etc.

If your structure varies between conditions, please test the extremes.  Also, please do both the normal and asymmetric loading conditions.  Look at your secondary structure and provide some sizes there.  We don't need every element sized, but we are looking for an idea that you know how your structural systems work.

It should go without saying that any visual support necessary to show what your calculations refer to is important.

Beam data

All,

We have uploaded the spreadsheet for Monday's beam testing results in the Materials section of Stellar.  This includes the load/displacement graph.  Information on how to read the data it is embedded in the file.  Note, like last time, each group has their own worksheet.  See the first page for your group number.  Wednesday's lab will receive their data following testing tonight.

Column data clarification

All,

The data in your excel sheets should be a load-displacement curve.  I accidentally labeled displacement as "strain" in my jpg image.  Hopefully you realized that this value is too high to be strain.  Also, the units are in inches, whereas strain is unitless.

Homework 5 notes

Hi All,

Some of you may have been scratching your heads over a few issues in the homework, which we wanted to clear up if we could:

Problem 1c)  If you're feeling like you just can't get the sign conventions straight, it's not just you. The shear and moment diagrams for 1C are flipped from parts A and B, and from what we're using. So mirror them both, and continue along your merry way.

Problem 2)  Make sure to use the sign conventions established in class and as noted above: align the moment diagram sign to that of the shear.  that way when we get a positive moment we know then that curvature is positive.  (if we were to get a negative moment then we would have negative curvature).
