Instructor: Alan M Berger

TA: Celina Balderas-Guzman

Workshop:  T2-5  (10-485)

Information:

In-depth research workshop on pressing environmental design issue of our time, includes discussion and practices of various Landscape-based disciplines used to generate design-based solutions and landscape infrastructural responses to physical urban entropy and decline. This year’s workshop will contribute to The Culture Now Project (www.culturenowproject.org), which declares itself as “an immersive investigation of the intersection of public policy, urban design, and the spatial manifestation of contemporary culture. The Culture Now Project initiated by Thom Mayne and Karen Lohrmann at UCLA/A.UD in 2010. In 2011 the project expanded into a collaborative platform linking 13 universities across the country. Alan Berger has been MIT’s agent involved in Culture Now since 2010, helping define its environmental components and potentials.

The Workshop site will be focused on the City and Counties surrounding Lincoln, Nebraska. We will use materials from the previous semester’s urban design studio to further our research and make environmentally-based landscape recommendations for the future growth of the city and county. Our contribution to Culture Now will be to infuse environmental thinking in the physical planning of existing and new city form, and to set an example of how environmental projects can expand the potential of Culture Now beyond traditional architectural or urban design based-project proposals.
