Information:
Traditional businesses often start from a novel technology or solution and attempt to shoehorn it into a market. Because the need is neither clear nor compelling, the result is often a fundamentally weak business. In this class, teams of students evaluate a clinical need and learn an effective process for turning this need into a business. Topics in the course include alternative solutions, intellectual property protection, market opportunity, regulatory and reimbursement hurdles, competitive threats and potential return on investment. Students are encouraged to interview key individuals including clinicians, potential customers, other stakeholders, consultants and competitors. Students will present a series of analyses and solutions to each of the critical issues faced in constructing a business to address the identified need.

Revised Course Format due to Inadequate Enrollment
The enrollment in 15.124J/HST.973J Evaluating a Biomedical Business Concept has dropped below the threshold needed in order run the course, as the faculty had anticipated, as a formal lecture type course with external speakers. Based on feedback that we have received from students the main issue regarding enrollment appears to be the perception that the amount of effort required is not commensurate with the 3 units of credit provided. We were aware of this issue but were not able to change the number of units for this year. We do anticipate offering a revised version of this course next year as a six or nine unit course.
The faculty realizes that students may have foregone other opportunities to register for this course, so we would like to offer the option to the remaining students to take the course in a revised format. For those who are interested we would plan to run the course as an independent study. The students would be expected to do the assigned reading and work on their cases, and meet with faculty periodically for discussion and to present the work they have done on their cases.
Each student should notify the teaching assistant, Sung You, and Professor Cohen of their intentions by email and may also call Sung at 508-887-6453 or Professor Cohen at 617-253-7430 to discuss.
