A Lovely Note from Sujata Moorti . . .

Hi all:  I sent Prof. Sujata Moorti a copy of your responses to her work, as I had promised her -- and received a lovely note back (and right away) which I wanted share with each of you. Have a wonderful weekend, lmb

Dear Linda and Kim,

Thank you for sharing my work-in-progress essay with your class.  I have
printed the responses and as I revise my essay over the next few weeks I
will incorporate these very generous suggestions from your students.  I
skimmed the first few responses and couldn't believe how extensive and
thoughtful these are.

Hope you are semester is winding down well.  I hope too that our paths
cross soon.
Warm regards,
Sujata

For next week April 30th: an added short essay for balance with the humanities!

Good morning everyone:

I'm so pleased that I have been able to persuade Prof. Sujata Moorti of Middlebury College (a humanist) whom I met at a symposium this March, to share a draft of her work-in-progress on competing representations of the surrogacy industry in India. I have just posted her pdf after the two essays by Prof. Elly Teman, an Israeli medical anthropologist (at "Materials" for April 30).  Prof. Moorti is most interested in our feedback, particularly since I sent her our syllabus and praised our outstanding group, so I ask that you each post a brief comment/response/question to assist Prof. Moorti as she continues to develop this project -- that is, with the understanding that this is very much a draft and that much the most important work we do as feminist scholars is assisting each other to develop our writing.  Remember that each of you should also be posting short questions for our discussion leaders Zie and Rebecca, who will be having a Skype conversation with Prof. Teman very early next Wed morning.  (This is in lieu of a sixth reaction paper, so again applies for both Group A and B.)  If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact Kim and I --  Thanks so much, lmb

GCWS 2014 Mother Board Writing Prize

Announcing… The GCWS 2014 Mother Board Writing Prize Call for Submissions!

This prize is an annual award honoring graduate student research and writing in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies.  One student will be recognized each year with an award for unpublished written work that exemplifies the three tenets central to the GCWS mission:

            - Interdisciplinary inquiry; In novative thinking; and  Epistemologically self-conscious investigation.

Eligibility: Students currently matriculated in a Masters or Doctorate program at one of the nine GCWS member institutions and who have been or are currently enrolled in a GCWS seminar.  Papers need not have been written for a GCWS course.  Submissions will be reviewed by a 2-person selection committee of GCWS affiliated faculty. The award of the writing prize will be announced at the end of the Spring semester.

Submission requirements:  see attachment under "Materials" -- and for many of you, something to keep in mind for upcoming years as this is an annual award!!

reading suggestions for _Professing Selves_

By request -- key chapters for our Najmabadi text :

Intro and chapter one are important to set up the study

3 & 4 are compelling in analysis of culture, image, and the political context

6-8 for the relationship between these identity issues, state interests, and narrative constructions.

so I would say skim over chapters 2 & 5 if you can't get to everything. . .

Dr Najmabadi will be coming to visit our class in the second half, arriving at 7pm. It will be really helpful for the discussion leaders if you can include some questions for her in the reaction papers -- and if Group A (whose week it is not) would like to just post questions, feel free to do so!

Reminder: We will check-in on plans for Second Inquiry projects this Wed Apr 16

Hi all:  We plan to spend time checking-in on your thoughts for Second Inquiry projects in our course meeting this week, in addition to discussion of the article by Tey Meadow and David Valentine book.  Meadow, a sociologist, and Valentine, an anthropologist, each also have been influenced by feminist interdisciplinarity and conversations in feminist theory about epistemology; and as in discussion of humanist Paula Treichler last week, we would like to use discussion at least in part to integrate material from across the semester.
