Follow on course to 1.00

A few students have asked the TAs if there is a follow on course to 1.00, and there is: 1.204, "Computer Algorithms in Systems Engineering", taught by George Kocur.  It's technically a first year grad course, but undergrads are welcome and we let undergrads omit a couple of topics.

We cover databases, including JDBC (Java database connectivity), a bit on algorithm complexity (O() notation explained more than in 1.00), data structures (review stacks, queues, trees, then cover heaps, sets, graphs), greedy algorithms (shortest paths, spanning trees in graphs), a bit more on recursion, dynamic programming (decision problems on graphs), solving linear systems (a bit more beyond Gaussian elimination) and nonlinear systems, branch and bound (decision problems again) and an intro to simulation.

There are 8 problem sets, most of which form one project, so you get a chance to build something larger than in 1.00. We use infrastructure as the focus of the problem sets, but it's a general model for many engineering systems. You can substitute a project of your own for a subset of the problem sets.

There are two quizzes; we may replace one with presentations if there are enough student-defined projects to present (rather than homework).

1.204 meets MW 1-2:30 in room 1-150.  More info is at http://stellar.mit.edu/S/course/1/sp08/1.204/. Please email (gkocur@mit.edu) if you have questions.
