Announcements

Addn to Friday April 22 (EARTH DAY) announcement

Dear 1.080 participants,

Prof Kroll and I want to announce an opportunity for those of you who did not do "so well" on test #2 to do some extra work and re-take a similar test in a couple of weeks (presumably Friday May 6).  We think this would enhance our goal to be sure you all finish the semester with a thorough understanding of the topics in environmental chemistry that we are discussing.  To be fair, this re-take would only allow you to move up one grade step from a B/C/D test grade to a A/B/C test grade.  (Tests with letter grades will be handed back to the class tomorrow at 1).

To prepare for this re-take, we will offer a series of problem solving sessions scheduled for our regular class times (Mondays and Fridays at 1) starting tomorrow April 22.  Our emphasis will be on getting you to solve problems on topics like partitioning, fluxes, and mass balances with "ease"!  We will also solicit topics from you that you feel are "elusive"!

hope to see you tomorrow,

Phil Gschwend

PSet 4 and next week

Hi everyone,

Two 1.080 announcements:

1) We've updated the last question of PSet 4 with a clarification and an extra (small) sub-question.  For those of you who have already printed it out, the new text (at the end of the PSet) is

"Assume the water is equilibrated with atmospheric CO2. Describe (qualitatively) would happen to the [Pb++] if the water were NOT originally equilibrated with CO2, but then was allowed to sit under air until equilibration occurs."

2) Schedule change for next week: the class on Monday (March 7) will be RECITATION - a review for Friday's exam.  That week's lecture will be on Tuesday, March 8, 12-1 (the normal recitation time).  Material from Tuesday's lecture will NOT be covered on the exam.
