Information:

Review of physical, chemical, ecological, and economic principles used to examine interactions between humans and the natural environment. Applications of mass balance concepts in ecology, chemical kinetics, and hydrology; energy balance concepts in building design, ecology, and climate change; economic and life-cycle concepts in resource evaluation and engineering design. Uses numerical models to integrate concepts and to assess environmental impacts of human activities. Problem sets involve development of MATLAB models for particular engineering applications. Some experience with computer programming is helpful but not essential.

Announcements

matlab on exam

Hi Everyone,

In case you missed the announcement in class last Wednesday, there will be a minor MATLAB component on the exam (written on paper, not on computers).

We're not too worried about getting the exact syntax right (ie. semi-colon vs colon, square brakets vs circle brackets etc.), but you should be able to do basic things like assigning variables and constructing a for loop.  Just a quick review of Problem Set 2 should be enough preparation for this.

Good luck!!

Teresa

Plan: Important -- please read

Dear all,

1. Tomorrow's lecture and Friday's recitation will be lead by Teresa Yamana on LCA. We hope to do some fun problems on the topic so please try to attend both meetings.
2. Next week's lectures (M-W) will be on solving a class of optimization problems for networks and resource allocation.
3. I will post ALL remaining lecture notes as soon as possible (by this weekend).
4. We will post a practice final exam by mid of next week. Recitation on Friday, May 17th will be focused on practice final exam.
5. I will hold regular OH this week and next, but you want to schedule a separate meeting, please send me an email.

Any other concerns -- let us know!

Best,
Saurabh

More hints on PSet 7 Problem 3

In Problem 3 part d) you need to combine your result from part 3b and 3c and get the expression of the following from:

dT= A dV + B dp.

Now from the exact differential of T in terms of V and p:

dT= C dV + D dp.

If these two expressions represent the exact differential of dT, we must have:

A=C and B=D,

and hence the desired result.
