6.443/8.371/18.436 Quantum Information Science
Spring 2013
Instructor: Peter W Shor
TAs: Mohammad Bavarian, Mo Bavarian
Lecture: TR1-2.30 (4-153)
Information:
Office Hours: Wednesdays 1:30 – 3:30
Room 2-369
Resources:
The textbook is Quantum Computation and Quantum
Information by Nielsen and Chuang. I will not be following it
closely, but will be using some sections of it to help prepare my
lectures.
Prof. John Preskill at Caltech has an excellent set of lecture notes for his course on Quantum Computation available online.
Webpages for previous versions of this course are linked from this page.
Andrew Lutomirski's took excellent scribe notes for the 2008 version of this course.
Grading:
Homework: 40%, Project 40%, Project Presentation: 20%.
There will be approximately 5 homework assignments during the term, and everybody is expected to do a project, due on the last day of class. The last two weeks will be devoted to project presentations given by the students.
Topics:
The topics for the next two or three lectures, and the corresponding sections in the textbook (if any) will be given on the Stellar class calendar. For the first part of the class, we will do
-
Basics of quantum information and computation
-
-
Quantum gates
-
teleportation and superdense coding
-
POVMs and quantum operations
-
-
Quantum Error Correction

Last Homework due tomorrow
Hi everyone,Just a reminder that the last homework is due tomorrow. Just in case the pressure of the final week has pressed you too hard, we have decided to be a bit lenient. If you would not be able to finish it by tomorrow, we still accept online submissions up until sunday 11pm , with no penalty as long as you notify us with email in advance. However, if you do not email us by tomorrow, the due date would count as tomorrow night as usual.
Another thing, please attend the presentations by other students. As extra incentive, we might be getting pizza, so don't miss it !
