Civic Media reading now posted

Dear Class, Sorry for the delay. I experienced some technical difficulties this weekend. The reading for 4/29 (Tu) class is now posted in the Materials section of our website. It's from the new book by Ethan Zuckerman who is Director of the Center for Civic Media at MIT, a joint project between CMS and the Media Lab.

No micro theme due for Tuesday. Instead, please identify several "key words" from the readings (both Ethan's and the E-Sports reading) to discuss in class.

See you Tuesday!

best, ian

"Something from Nothing" readings for 4/24 are now posted

Hi Class, Readings for 4/24 (R) are now posted. I've uploaded Ch. 1 (33 pages) of TL Taylor's 2012 book about E-Sports and two recent articles from the NY Times that explore the idea of new digital businesses. No class Tuesday, but yes lab Wednesday and class Thursday. See you then. Best, Ian

Tips from last lab

Hi class,

Thanks for a great class yesterday, and good job Jordan, Tori and Yuka!

Scot and I touched base and we think that a few tips came out of yesterday's class:

- Dial into the conference so that you can hear the audio, then mute your mic to avoid the echo (unless you are the host!)
- you can chat with "everyone" or individuals in private
- raise hand if you'd like to answer a question (it's a small icon at the bottom left corner of the participants list)

Next week we have two presentations by Val & Hannah and Shawn & Aki. See you all soon!

Scott McCloud "Understanding Comics" now posted

Hi class,

See materials section on our Stellar site for Scott McCloud reading "Understanding Comics."

For your microthemes next week, you are encouraged to try submitting your comments in visual, rather than written form, if you like. Writing is still OK as an alternative too.

See you Tuesday!

best, ian

Moving forward in lab!

Hi Class,

I'm super bummed missing you all's presentations two weeks ago; but great discussion today, and we are super excited to see how this rolls out moving forward!

To recap next part of the assignment:
- You will work with current team to prepare a 30 - 50 minutes class using MIT-licensed WebEx on the medium that you've worked in.
- Your team should engage a) at least one theorist from your readings b) at least one artifact within the medium and c) what you perceive to be the future of that medium, either of it as a professional industry, or as a cultural practice by the society as a whole.
- Try to get the audience involved within five minutes of your presentation; no lectures please!

In terms of timeline, please see below:
4/9 Scot will talk about pedagogy models and his research
4/16 Yuka, Tori and Jordan
4/23 Val and Hannah / Shawn and Aki
4/30 Adam and Sam / Erin, Karleigh and Tom
5/7 Allan and Cimmy (?) / Hairou and Raeez (?)

Email me if the time slot doesn't work for you or your teammates. Thanks!
