16.00 End of Term

Dear 16.00 students,
Your portfolios are in well-marked boxes in 37-219, ready to be collected. I will keep them there until next fall, in case some of you have already left for the summer and want to pick them up when you get back to MIT.
The graded LTA final reports are also in the portfolio boxes, ready for pickup.

I hope you all enjoyed the class this spring. I wish you all a pleasant and productive summer and success in the rest of your time at MIT.

Best Wishes,
Professor Jeff Hoffman

Equipment Return and Lab Cleanup

Hello all,

I hope studying is going well for your other classes. Today from 3-5pm I'll be in the hangar for you guys to return your parts. YOU MUST RETURN THE PARTS AND CHECK IT OFF WITH ME OR ALEX IN PERSON FOR YOUR GROUP TO GET CREDIT. Simply leaving your vehicle in the lab is not enough; please take it apart and phyiscally give us the parts and watch us check you off. There were some issues in getting all of the Lego groups in on time, and we don't have enough time left before the end to do that again. If you can't make it today, Alex will be available midday Monday (exact hours TBD). Also, every group should clean up the space where they were working by throwing out all scrap materials and the paper that was lining the tables.

Thank you, and I hope to see you later.
Ryan

Question on LTA Final Report

Question: For the LTA project writeup, for the last section you write that "You should include a write-up of the results of race day on 12 May." For this, do you want just a writeup of how our test day 3 went complete with our times, or do you want something else?

Answer: I think time is important, since speed was a critical design goal. You estimated a top speed for CDR, and you measured it last week in the time trial, when you only had to hold a straight course with no turns. Your report should discuss the difference between the predicted and measured speeds. Also, how does your speed on a straightaway compare with the amount of time it took to go around the race course (for calculation purposes, assume the course length is 120 meters). What roll did controllability play in the difference? How about stability?
These are the sorts of things you need to extract from test trials when you are developing new systems. If you can think of other interesting conclusions, I always welcome learning something new.
Please remember to make sure all team members have a copy of your team's
LTA final report for their portfolios, in addition to the report you will hand in at the beginning of class. I would also like a Word copy of your team's final report via email.
Good job by everyone today. I hope you all had some fun and relaxation in what I know is a stressful time, and from the discussions I have overheard, it sounds like you learned a lot about the whole design-build-fly concept.
Well done!
