9.357  Touching and Grasping with Soft Fingers

Spring 2017

Instructor: Edward H Adelson

Seminar:  M3-5  (46-4199)

Information:

How can we build robot fingers that provide the sensitivity and dexterity of human fingers? We’ll explore human touching and grasping, and the way they depend on the sensory and mechanical properties of the fingers. In parallel, we’ll look at current capabilities of robot fingers and hands, and ask how they may be enhanced with soft sensitive fingers. This will be a reading and doing seminar. We’ll discuss readings, and we’ll do experiments both in class and outside of class. Students will get to play with some state of the art touch sensors. Listeners are welcome.
