Characterization of atomic arrangements in crystalline and amorphous solids: metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers (including proteins). Topical coverage of organic chemistry, solution chemistry, acid-base equilibria, electrochemistry, biochemistry, chemical kinetics, diffusion, and phase diagrams. Examples from industrial practice (including the environmental impact of chemical processes), from energy generation and storage (e.g., batteries and fuel cells), and from emerging technologies (e.g., photonic and biomedical devices).

MIT's "mind and hand" philosophy is evident in 3.091 with the introduction of the Goodie Bag. Each week, students will be issued a challenge that uses this kit outfitted with all the tools and materials required to discover the real-world aspects of Solid State Chemistry. Without giving away any surprises, the goodie bags will require teamwork, exploring new parts of campus, and a good deal of hands-on science!
